Still my favorite in the "Mortal Kombat" franchise.

User Rating: 9 | Mortal Kombat XL PS4

Pros:

  • Fast-paced fighting gameplay that's still my favorite in the series.
  • A deep set of mechanics make for a rich fighting experience.
  • Plenty of bloody, brutal fatalities for those that can handle them.
  • Incredible visual design, with plenty of attention to detail in the fatalities.
  • Story is as insane as any "Mortal Kombat" game, which should be exactly what fans are looking for.
  • Excellent diversity of playstyles in the roster.
  • New additions like the Towers and the Krypt are pretty great.
  • Plenty of replayability and content to explore in this one.

Cons:

  • Those quick-time events in the story mode felt inconsequential and pace-breaking, and really had no place in the game.

Consensus: Even after the release of "Mortal Kombat 11," whose campaign I beat first (and did enjoy), I always held the opinion that "Mortal Kombat X" (or "XL," since that was the version I played) was my favorite in the series. Of course, that's largely thanks to it being the one I put the most time into, but with "11" slowing the mechanics down a lot, I continued to prefer "X" instead. After finally playing through the story mode, I immediately remember why. This is a fantastically polished experience in the series, and I feel like I'll always prefer "X" over "11" for the same reason I prefer a fighter like "Super Smash Bros. Melee" over "Super Smash Bros. Brawl"; the faster fighting mechanics. "Mortal Kombat X" delivered extremely hard on that front, and the game never failed to entertain me. I hope if "Mortal Kombat 12" becomes a thing (which it most likely will), NetherRealm brings the mechanics and speed closer to "X" than "11." We'll have to wait to find out, but until then, "Mortal Kombat X" remains my favorite in the series and is definitely worth your time.

Final rating: 9 out of 10 "Awesome"
