Motorstorm Apocalypse is an ambitious game only crippled by a cheap A.I./difficulty.

Have you ever experienced a game that plays great, looks great and feels great but theres just something about it that hinder it from reaching the excelent status? Thats how I feel about Motorstorm: Apocalypse. Its a visual feast full on impressive setpieces, amazing graphics and, on top of that, great arcade gameplay. So why it "only" got AA status from me instead of AAA? Simple. Motorstorm: Apocalypse is plagued by a ferocious and cheap A.I. that acts randomly and completely screws you over at the most inconvenient of times. The game makes you feel like only the last lap matters. Lets suppose the race has 4 laps. You can do pretty bad on the first 3 laps but if you perform very well on the last one you can win the race. Vice versa is also applied i.e. if you do great on the first 3 laps but have 1 or 2 accidents on the last lap, you can lose the race thus demanding you to start all over again the race but since you already know about this fact, the player will be completely relaxed through the first three laps and only care about the last one, wich kills some of the excitement of the races. Worst of all, most of the cheap A.I. have a tendency to completely **** you over on the last lap. No need to say its a very frustrating game at times.
I only beat the Festival mode, wich is basicaly the story mode with the typical Races, Elimination events and a couple of non-competitive events full on set-pieces moments. Sure they dont add much on challenge but they are impressive visual feasts for the eyes. I only raced once online but it seemed like a solid experience. Other than that the player can also complete a good amount of special events and collect cards spread along the courses so its definitely a game with a lot of replayability. Recommended for arcade racing fans but prepare for some controller toss.
