WOW Lich King heads for beta

Second expansion to Blizzard Entertainment's massively popular MMORPG taking applicants for near-final testing phase.

At least a few of the 10 million-plus World of Warcraft fans invariably shed a tear when it was revealed that Blizzard Entertainment's teaser campaign leading up to last weekend's Worldwide Invitational pertained to Diablo III, and not the Wrath of the Lich King. Said gamers can dry their eyes, given that Blizzard has officially initiated beta-testing sign-ups for the second expansion to its massively popular, massively multiplayer online role-playing game.

According to Blizzard's community site, the Wrath of the Lich King beta will differ from previous closed beta tests in that WOW players with an active account will be required to opt in to participate in the test. The developer also notes that opting in does not guarantee a slot in the closed testing period.

As detailed in GameSpot's recent preview of the game from this year's WWI event in Paris, Wrath of the Lich King will introduce a new class playable by all races: the Death Knight. Available to all players of level 55 and above, this unholy champion works its will through rune-powered spells and also has the ability to command an underling.

World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King has not yet been dated. However, Blizzard parent company Vivendi said that it expected the expansion to ship during the second half of 2008. Retailers are under the assumption that the next expansion to one of the all-time best-selling games will arrive for the PC and Mac in November.

"people need to stop complaining about the graphics. They aren't that great because the game is so huge. Who cares about what it looks like as long as the game is still fun. I love the cartoony feel to it."

AoC is much larger and has better graphics.

Dreadfall it's really down to the player to decide whether they enjoy the graphics or not, imo they are nice and simple and still manage to look inviting. Yet I doubt the graphics will last too much longer. But yes i do agree the game does get a bit boring, but there is still quite a bit to do, whether it's pvp or pve at end game. I'm not entirely sure WotLK will be good enough to keep me playing. So I personally will probably only play WoW up until WAR comes out, hopefully that will bring a few new tricks to the genre.

I never really understood what people get out of that game. I played the game for around 3 months I believe, got to level 60 back around 2005. After 60 there was nothing left to do, made potions mostly and then everyone else did, so naturally I stopped making money on the auction. I quit because the game gets boring plus the graphics really suck, it's like playing someones art project. The textures and graphics look too cartoony, plus no housing still for this lich king expansion, shameful.

I'm not a MMORPG fan but the buzz and popularity of WOW is amazing. I think it's awesome that a video game can cause so much excitement. This game proves how powerful the gaming community as a whole has become over the last few years. This game brings alot of new gamers into the gaming community as well as keeping hardcore gamers entertained enough to keep gaming. Blizzard has done more than make games. They have created a whole virtual lifestyle for gamers and the release of Wrath of the Lich King will only make it bigger and stronger.

@thekodaman: D3 didn't just start production now because "WoW is stumbling" - It's been in developement pretty much since 2001, although it got put back to square one in 2003/2004 when Blizzard North got merged with Blizzard and the project was found not to meet the Blizz quality standard. So it's not like it's just started production...

I can't play as much as I did before as my life in 2007 was, from January to October, nothing but WoW! ** I hope I don't become addicted again... Oh, who am I kidding, I KNOW I will become addicted! peetower. I cant agree with your comments at all, Blizzard has always produced alot of content that could have waited for a cheap and rushed expansion pack. They imho have always supported all thier games and no matter how well D3 does, WOW is a monthly continued revenue and will be the milk cow for a very long time. I think if nothing else D3 will work with WOW to bring new people to both games.

Now if they would just email me about my beta key!

Jeez crysis.. Yea i bought that game months ago when i built my new quad-core gaming rig. I heard its great and watched all the game play movies. Looks like the action and gameplay rivals half-life. But crysis graphics still put its great gameplay out of reach. So maybe in a year or so, when i have built another killer rig, I can play crysis as it should be played - rendered in full detail..

Until then, i praise blizzard. I think they made all the right moves with regard to WoW. I can enjoy WoW NOW because the graphics are beautiful, stylistic, yet simple and accessible to everyone. Plus, they continue to support and refine their game with additional content. Not many companies can claim to do that.

lol games die when they reach 10 million users!

    That's sig worthy...

seriously it's sad that they tease for Diablo 3 before Lich King...

I stopped playing WoW a short time ago, I knew they would just focus on D3 soon and the best of WoW (back when MC & Onyxia were weekly fun) is already a thing of the past for me...

They are now focusing on PvP, Arena&BGs and smaller instances, I was interested in running 40 people raids...

I still remember three years ago reading in the "Coming soon" section something called Hero Classes...Siege Weapons...

Three years later they are trying to sell a second expansion without ever delivering on those... Ooh, the Death Knight, I guess that counts as a Hero class... but we gotta pay for it heheh...

I'm kinda off the Blizz wagon, i don't really like how they treat their most loyal customers, those of us who not only played their older games but also got them through the "post-D2/Starcraft" days by playing WoW.

I'm sure D3 will be amazing and that's why they should focus their publicity on Lich King... They expect it will sell as much or better as the first expansion ; they could have a nasty surprise, a bunch of people waiting for Diablo 3 refusing to keep plunking dough for WoW... and they would have only themselves to blame...

Hope the Lich King isn't just twelve new monster models with multi pallette swaps...

The pure amount of hate in these responses kinda makes me a little leery leaving WoW to play other popular games that most of you play. I liek playing WoW and am looking forward to Lich King. If you don't like it or think "it needs a facelift" go play AoC. Jumping jeebus you fanboys get angry easy.

think blizzard should focus an expansion on more Class based quests where they have quests specifically tailored to a class and only that class does it hunter quests and lock quests etc that would make each class have back a little bit more of their individuality

earlthecannibal I just like to say.. you what!??! Blizzard always take there time with there games and so they should, if you rush it, it ends up being rubbish. Yes Blizzard properly have endless resources but that doesn't mean they can just rush the game out. Also if they add new instances and classes they will have to take an awful amount of time to rewrite the storyline so they would fit in and balance new classes they would start neglating the new end level content, and anyway the only new classes they should add now are hero classes.

I had stopped playing Warcraft but since playing Lich King at the invitational, it's brough new life into the game and now i'm enjoying WoW once again thanks to it. And like ciaxhieu said, gameplay is what matters not the graphics and Warcraft has that awsome gameplay and you should thank Blizzard for it.
Besides the reason for the low end graphics is that it allows the game to work on almost any machine which makes the game even more appealing to gamers with low end machines.

Ranteal: This looks stupid. I mean why make a game about a guy with white hair, it makes no sense! If that was a sarcastic comment about Sephiroth, you failed your entire life.

There is a general negativity in this thread. So what if the game has aged old? Last time I checked, it was the gameplay and content that made a game good, not its graphics. People who care so much about graphics are those who now hail Crysis as the holy grail of gaming (don't get me wrong, it IS very enjoyable), and will say it is a god-awful game when a game with even better graphics comes around.

In the end, Blizzard is a company. They care about making money. If you think your favorite company cares more about their fanbase than making money, you are: (i) below 18 and/or (ii) ignorant. And yes, this includes Nintendo who has undisputably shown the best interest in satisfying their fanbase. They are just not using the EA/Sega approach to it.

Mortal_Medic I agree with your posts. Blizzard knows how to keep it's fanbase. World of Warcraft is what it is; and therefore certain aspects of the game will never change. You probably will not see any content that doesn't have to do with the endgame material regarding PvP or endgame raiding; those two things are what the fans want and that is what Blizzard is going to deliver.

But regardless of what MMORPG it is we all want new classes and races to play. But weren't Hero classes originally a idea for the initial release of WoW(or something relative to it)?

I played World of Warcraft for a year and I enjoyed much of it until I notice that the endgame content was too time-consuming for myself, and pretty much became my only options of available gameplay.

I don't think you'll see any dramatic alternatives to PvP(which they can only go so far considering the games built) or raiding for a long time if ever. What could have they done this time around? Add intriguing storytelling(Lotro, or FFXI for example); it's Warcraft. Perhaps add others systems in the game to accomadate the crafting system, or reputation(diplomacy). Hell a diplomacy system would be good(or even class), allowing players from the Horde and Alliance to visit one another and to speak too. But ideas like that are too far away from the core gameplay and what everyone else wants out of WoW.

It's all great and dandy that they are offering up beta finally, but what is it going to matter? There's a texture glitch in the moat of Stormwind still!!! Evade bugs are still all throughout the game, both Old World AND Outlands. Abilities are still glitched! I mean, when it comes down to it, I would rather have Blizz fix the game they currently HAVE rather than worry about putting out a new expansion!!! Seriously...

...and it's not like the beta is going to do anything but just give the public a taste of what there is to come in the expansion. They aren't going to fix any of the stuff in there. I love how Blizz always talks about releasing games when they are "ready"...and yet the games are glitchy as hell. The concepts and gameplay, sure, are pretty top-notch in at least TWO of their franchises (that would be Diablo and, as much as I hate it, Starcraft).

All I'm saying is...whatever. It's coming out later this year, millions will play it...I'll at least have a subscription to it until Diablo III is out and I can play a REAL game again.

@scak4life: There ARE people like me who find raiding to be far too time-consuming, uninteresting, and boring. I mean, by all means, if scripted encounters are your thing, knock yourself out. Coming from DAoC and Guild Wars, where PvP was GOD, I quite enjoy that Blizz is finally putting a little harder focus on their PvP...even if it is still lacking HORRIFICLY in all the important ways. WSG is still a horrible BG idea, as there is no time limit to it and leads to ridiculously and unneccesary long matches of nothingness. EOTS is way too simple to play on, as all you need is a 7 man zerg force going around and grabbing nodes. AV is a PvE instance labeled as PvP. The only REAL PvP in the game comes from AB...and even then...all you need is LM and BS...then fill in with farm or ST. = /

Arenas are a joke, as any 2v2 team of resto druid/arms warrior or ret pally/rogue or disc-holy priest/rogue can rack up a 2200 rating without even putting out effort. And now, frost mage/SLSL lock teams are made a million pounds easier with the latest patch changes.

In turn...Diablo III is where the best stuff is going to be at...so we've just gotta patiently wait.
