[UPDATE] Following the publication of this story, a Microsoft representative provided a statement clarifying the ways in which content is captured through the Xbox One Game DVR feature.

"Xbox One keeps a rolling record of your most recent gameplay, and there are two main ways for this video to be captured by Game DVR," the representative said. "First, game developers mark 'greatest clips' that happen within the game that represent fun and interesting moments within gameplay, such as when you unlock certain Achievements. Additionally, you can also issue commands, with either your voice or the controller, to capture interesting moments you would like to record or that just happened.

Previously, players would have to set up an external capture system to save a moment such as this.

The Game DVR feature continually records around five minutes of footage in the background, which players can then process through Microsoft's Upload studio and share with friends. Captured content can be shared only through Xbox Live at launch, with support for social networking sites like Facebook coming later.

Sony's PlayStation 4 will automatically record the last 15 minutes of gameplay, which players can then edit and share with their friends through the DualShock 4's new "Share" button. It is not clear if the PS4's video recording functionality will record the moment a player unlocks a trophy.

The Xbox One and PS4 launch next month. According to a report from the International Data Corporation, the PS4 will outsell the Xbox One at launch due to a variety of factors, including its lower price point.
