A fun hack 'n slash that's a little too repetitive.

Video game designer Tomonobu Itagki developed one of the best action games ever made: 2004's "Ninja Gaiden". It is a masterpiece which still holds up well today. Its sequel "Ninja Gaiden II, amped up the action and violence immensely. And while it didn't exactly set the world on fire, it was a respectable follow-up which hardcore fans loved. Unfortuantely, Mr. Itagki left Team Ninja on the eve of its release and never looked back. His successor, Yosuke Hayashi, took over leadership and developed PS3 versions of the games. "Ninja Gaiden III" is his first original project with the franchise. To say the least, it is has been streamlined to win a new audience..

Unfortunately, the game lacks the depth and variety of the previous titles. Ninja hero Ryu Hayabusa no longer carries more than just one melee weapon. There are no weapon upgrades or multiple ninpo attacks. Ryu uses only the Dragon Sword, shuriken and bow/arrow to annilhate his enemies with. The game's eight stages include limted enemy types and bosses which are recycled frequently. Hardcore fans will not be impressed with the level design or repetitive nature But despite the game's "stripped down" feel, the action is quite amusing. It's kinetic, if mindless fun. And the improved camera does give players a great view of the action. Also, Hard mode is really challenging.

"Ninja Gaiden 3" has a more personal story than the previous games. It is an examination of Ryu's questionable morality, but it doesn't go very deep. The game lasts about 8 to 10 hours but includes a multiplayer modes which prove to be entertaining. In "Ninja Trials", two players hack n' slash through waves of increasinly difficult enemies. And "Clan Battles" is Team Deathmatch with constantly changing objectives. It's a mix between "Tenchu" and "Assassin's Creed" multiplayer modes. You'll gain experience points and unlockables as you progress In both coop and competitive matches.

"Ninja Gaiden 3" plays like a "Ninja Gaiden" for beginners. If you want a true NG experience, I'd suggest buying the '04 game. And if you're looking for truly great action, then get the first sequel. However, if you just love "Ninja Gaiden" no matter what changes occur, trying renting it first. You may like it or you might just hate it. "Ninja Gaiden III" is one of those games. It'll appeal to the casual fan, but appall the purists.

Pros: Tight controls, unique combat system, good boss battles. Ninja trials. Functionble camera. Hard mode is really hard. Free DLC.

Cons: Game's design has been stripped down: only one weapon, one magic attack, no upgrades, braindead enemies. Repeating quick time events and enemies. Story is weak.
