As many of you know the Sega Saturn was a disaster, it never was a success the way Sony or even Nintendo was during the 32/64 bit console war. Sega tried many tricks to gain people back to the Sega side having lost so many as a result of high prices and poor quality games, not to mention an already tarnished reputation from both the 32x and Sega\Mega CD. There were many games released to help tackle this problem including re-released (but improved) versions of the older titles such as Daytona USA and Virtua Fighter.

However where Radiant Silvergun fits in is almost unknown. Radiant Silvergun was far better than most of Sega's attempts at saving the Saturn and it wasen't even devloped by them, yet it was released exclusively to Japan. The game was origianlly an ST-V arcade game in 1998 and developed by Treasure (who had already gained their popularity thanks to Gunstar Heroes) it was an intense side-scroller, really intense, and it managed to challange peoples thoughts on what Saturn games were really like.

Radiant Silvergun used a mixture of 2D and 3D graphics which, in my opinion, were well done. The designs were also distinctive and it is animated very smoothly especially when the action gets tough. The sound was also more than memorible and featured some very "catchy" tracks, the sound effects are as expected from any side-scroller shoot'em up however but thats a small complaint if you check what genre the game is in.

The gameplay is also very unique as you have 7 weapons at your disposal that allow more than a few strategies to be created, and you will need stratregies...This game is hard, very hard, although bizzarly the difficulty will never send you into a fustarated state like any other game - the difficulty can be amplified to a degree where you have limitless continues (set the game into "Arcade mode" by rearanging the options) and why not bring a friend along to help you with the expierence?

Radiant Silvergun has almost everything including the suitable atmosphere, but does it really suit to an western audience? My answer is yes, it does and even if you have the game imported or emulated much of it is understandable.

So there you have it. Radiant Silvergun is more than a game I'd recommend, if you do find it and have a regionless Sega Saturn try the game, it really is worth it!
