A game that is as much fun to play as it is to look at!

The first thing one needs to know before playing the recently released Rocket Knight is that it is not a remake of either Rocket Knight Adventures or the sequel, Sparkster. This is a totally new game that follows the storyline of those games and is actually set fifteen years later. I will not spoil elements of the plot besides that, but to briefly introduce this game, you do indeed still play as Sparkster, a Rocket Knight armed with a sword, suit of armor, and more importantly, a rocket strapped to his back. With these tools you will proceed through a number of side-scrolling, platforming levels while fighting badguys, rocket-boosting onto platforms, hanging from wires with your tail (you are an opossum, after all!), flying through the air like something from R-Type or Gradius, and occasionally fighting cunning bosses that require a combination of perception, reflexes, and pattern recognition to conquer.

After having said all this, it should appear somewhat obvious that I liked this game. A lot, actually! Not only did it bring back fond memories of my childhood when I enjoyed the original Rocket Knight Adventures, but it also awakened more general memories of the way games used to be made. Fun, fast, difficult, and short, with plenty of rewards in store for the gamer willing to put the time in to get better at the game, beating his high-score and finishing the game in under an hour without losing any lives! Yes, this game is challenging, even on the normal difficulty. Yes, this game has a set number of lives and continues. Yes, this game is relatively short. Yes, this game keeps track of your highscore which you can compare with a global leaderboard. In other words, this game brings back all the design concepts that I had almost forgotten about, wrapped up in a game that is as much fun to play as it is to look at (and the graphics really are nice).
