I wouldn't call it shallow. Its good for what it is.

User Rating: 6.5 | Samurai Warriors Chronicles 3DS
This game probably has decent story telling if you were japanese and can understand the voices, but its all text. Normally I don't mind sub titles, but there is just way too much text to go around in this game. And when you are fighting, its difficult to read the text and fight at the same time. I really hate to say it, but English voice acting would really come in handy in this game.

Not to mention, if you don't know Japanese names, then tall the objectives just sound like jumbled garbage. Like they might as well be saying "Objective: go kill Ejijkajijlakukuai and save the town of Awiwaajowatashiawastu be sure you keep harawiiwiwjapmami and Paawejadsjionilatsuichi alive". I'm not kidding, the entire game is like that. I don't know if it is based on actual history and that's why its so boring or what.

I give it a 6.5 because there is alot of depth with upgrading weapons, leveling characters, obtaining items, new abilities, swapping out characters and branching story lines. The game is really polished too. For what it is, its great.

The game's story definately shows some soul. The storyline really does try to encompass something that isn't just crap. It really does seem to have some soul to it. But her'es the problem; I'm not japanese, and I didn't grow up in the culture. I honestly think that even the hardcore fans of japanese art/games will fail to fully appreciate this game if they didn't grow up in Japan. So, unfortunately...the story bores me and makes all dialog painful to play through.
