Shank channels the greatest of 2D and 3D action games into one bloody grindhouse package

User Rating: 9 | Shank X360
Shank is a 2D beat 'em up that channels (or recycles, depending on your view) the western aesthetic of certain grindhouse films and the storyline of Kill Bill. Despite an "unoriginal" premise, the game uses these elements to its advantage, crafting intense and violent gameplay that would fit perfectly within any grindhouse film of yore and would certainly bring a smile to Quentin Tarantino's face.

Shank plays almost like a 2D version of Bayonetta, as the titular character deftly platforms through strip clubs, meat packing factories, and over rooftops, all the while stringing together gruesome combos with his many weapons. Nothing is more satisfying than sliding down the side of a building, jumping over a pit of bloody buzz saws, and pouncing on a gun toting thug and jamming your knives into his neck.

The game's apparently blood lust and tight gameplay are more than enough to carry this title to prominence, however, this game has as much style as it does substance.

Graphically, the game is gorgeous, with very little distinction in graphical quality between the cut scenes and gameplay. The game appears almost as an interactive cartoon, and is one of the best looking games ever released, Xbox Live Arcade or otherwise.

The gameplay never gets old, but that may be in part because the game is so short. The main story can be completed in about three hours, less for a talented gamer. And the co-op side-story is even shorter. Although there may be a dearth of content, the game does offer many unlockables and rewards to gamers who give the game multiple play throughs. And with gameplay as great as Shank's, why wouldn't you?

Shank stands as one of the best looking, most intense, and most fun action games released this year. It may be short, but for an a fan of 2D or 3D action games from River City Ransom to God of War, this game is an absolute must play.
