Shovel Knight Specter of Torment Review

User Rating: 10 | Shovel Knight: Specter of Torment 3DS

Overall: 10/10

This game is amazing. So, let’s get into it.

Gameplay: The gameplay of this Specter knight’s camping consists of 3 things. The sliding, the hitting, and the jumping. Let’s start with the first one. The sliding. This was my favorite part of the game, were you just skate on your scythe, down a special platform. Even the final boss uses the sliding mechanic, I’ll get to him later. It just feels so fast, so fluid and just plain fun to skate on your scythe. I just wished that it did more with that concept. The second thing the hitting, or the combat if you want to say it like that. Unlike Shovel of Hope or king of cards. Specter knight uses a homing attack sort of thing. It locks on to an enemy or an object, and then it slashes that thing, helping you get towards your goal faster. The hitting and the jumping both coincide with each other. Just like the sliding, this is also really fast, fluid, and fun. The final thing is jumping. It’s the same thing as most platforming games. You jump and that is it. BUT. The hitting adds on to the jumping, making it easier to jump and easier to platform. Same with the relics, which change up the gameplay by making you stronger. Same with the upgrades as in health and magic upgrades. And the same with the armor. The armor is less practical than the rest of them, but they do help you with any struggles you have. That would be it for the gameplay. It gets a strong 9.5/10. Should have had more sliding.

Music: It’s good. It’s 8-bit. That is all I have to say. It gets a 10/10. I liked it.

Collectibles: The main collectibles in this game are, the red skull things that give you more relics. Gold which gives you more armors and other things. This time there aren’t any music sheets. Which is quite sad. I can’t rate this one because it’s just collectibles.

Atmosphere/Story: One word: Dark. I won’t spoil anything except the final boss. I recommend seeing this story for yourself. Overall both get a 10/10.

The bosses/Enemies: This was my least favorite part of the game. In the other campaigns, the bosses felt like a challenge after a stage. They felt like rewards for beating a stage, and when you beat a boss, that too feels like a reward. In this game the bosses aren’t challenging, so when you beat them it feels not like a reward, but more like something that’s just there to cause a mild inconvenience in your path. The enemies were good. The bosses get a 6.5/10 from me. But the enemies don’t get a rating because they are just enemies.

The final boss: This is not only how you end a game, this is how you make a flawless final boss. You fight with the sliding mechanic, which makes this boss a straight 10/10. This boss is the best part of the game. I am not joking about that.

So yeah, this game is without a doubt a must buy.
