An improvement over the first "Sonic" game, but not by much.

*DISCLAIMER: Hi, one more of these. I'm changing the format that I'm gonna try to do for now. Instead of doing full-blown reviews, I'm just gonna list my pros and cons, and maybe a tiny sum-up/consensus of some kind. I may make them slightly longer pros and cons if I feel I have a lot to say, but it's not gonna be in the paragraphs-long format I usually do. I'm sorry if this change is upsetting, but I have my reasons*

Pros:

  • More varied gameplay compared to the first game.
  • Great level design, I appreciate that they've outfitted the levels to benefit speed a lot more.
  • The addition of Tails is awesome, he's always been my favorite "Sonic" character.
  • The Spin Dash was introduced here, and...I mean, come on, it's the Spin Dash.
  • Visually just as great as it most likely was back in 1992.
  • The music is every bit as charming as it once was.

Cons:

  • To me, it still doesn’t feel like a huge improvement over the first game. Granted, though, that could be hindsight from playing it after other 2D "Sonic" titles, which utilized this game's mechanics enough to where they were more commonplace.

Consensus: "Sonic the Hedgehog 2" is an improvement over its predecessor, but only a small one. That's not a shot against "Sonic 2" either, as it's more a testament to the fact that the first game remains solid to this day. This is seen by many as one of Sonic's finest adventures ever, and while I wouldn't say my opinions are nearly as high, it's still a good time. Play it if you haven't already (which chances are, you have).
