Fun In The Sun

User Rating: 8 | Sunset Overdrive XONE

When the citizens of Sunset City are mutated into monstrous beasts and anarchy reigns, it requires you to take back the city and protect the quirky characters of Insomniacs open world adventure. To start, the game is rapid and you'll find yourself grinding on rails, swinging on poles, hurdling vehicles and wall running across skyscrapers and thankfully the controls are pinpoint and precise. They do take a period of time to get used too and you may find your fingers are stretched to their limits, but once it comes together the controls allow you to move at great speed whilst laying waste to hordes of mutants.

There's a vast amount of customisation in the game, from creating your character to choosing what modifiers (VATS and AMPS as the game calls them) you need to best suit your play style. The game is laced with some great humour and you will find yourself laughing out load as the game openly teases our obsession with modern pop culture. The range of weapons are well varied and compliment each other very well. You get your standard pistols and shotguns but you also get your hands on explosive teddy bear launchers, freeze guns, acid sprinklers and many many more. Mixing these weapons up allows you to come up with some creative ways of disposing of your foes and the fact that you never have to reload your weapons means the pace of the fire fights never drops. Enemies in the game come in many different forms and each poses their own unique challenges meaning the action never becomes stale and always remains challenging, especially by the end when the game throws different combinations of enemies at you.

Missions are diverse and can involve anything from escorting citizens through the dangerous city streets to frying pigeons in order to feed a sick and dying king. There are also challenges in the game that test different skills such as rail grinding or monster killing and also hundreds of collectables to find that you can trade in for new skills and equipment. The story about a big corporation turning the cities citizens into mutants and then trying to cover it up is also funny and well told. Finally there is also a multiplayer component called chaos squad but I never felt the need to have a look at that as the single player provided everything I was looking for.

So to conclude Sunset Overdrive is a game that over it's 17 hour campaign provides entertainment, laughs and a good challenge, all dressed up in a beautiful, colourful and stylish sun drenched package.
