Okay, so maybe it didn’t quite happen like that. Regardless, guiding a monkey in a plastic ball is what you do in Super Monkey Ball (SMB). At its core, SMB is a very simple game. The main aspect of the game is the arcade mode. You simply guide your Monkey to a goal on each stage. It is really that simple, or is it?

The stages that you navigate are full of obstacles. These include moving platforms, jumps, hills, holes, and bumpers that will knock you around. Despite the challenges presented in the game, SMB manages to have a very nice learning curve built in and allows gamers to gradually take to the games physics and control.

The controls are nice and straightforward, managing to serve the overall experience fairly well. A feature to control the camera angle would have been very useful, but at the same time would have taken away from the challenge this game presents.

Multiplayer has many options and mini games available. You can play the standard game by taking turns with another player, or you can play a competition mode. In competition mode you first select five stages. Then, with up to four players, you compete on these selected stages and try to race to the finish. It is a frantic blast. The multiplayer mode also features several mini games that are as much a blast as the original game. Some of these are: bowling, golf, boxing, and a target game very reminiscent of Pilot Wings (the parachuting part). They really add to the title well. The mini games are separate from the main game, for the most part, and serve as an excellent break when you just cannot seem to get past a certain board.
