Prince of Persia with Guns

User Rating: 4 | Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Blacklist X360

Like the title said above, I can summarize Splinter Cell Blacklist with that one sentence. Now while Prince of Persia is a great series of games, fusing that into a game based on stealth doesn't meld well. It amazes me how over the course of two games Ubisoft has managed to unravel everything that made Splinter Cell great. Double Agent wasn't a masterpiece by any means but at least it was a Splinter Cell title.

Story

A generic ho hum "Terrorist group threatens to destroy the world" plot. To be honest I remember nothing about the story whatsoever, because its so forgettable. Starting with Conviction it seems Sam has been taking frequent dips in the Lazarus Pit and is regressing in age. What started out as a man pushing 50 has now regressed into a 35 year old "Generic Every Guy".

Sound

Which leads me into the voice acting... Michael Ironside is no more as Sam Fisher. In his place they hired a bored sounding mid thirties actor who delivers each line with such a lack of conviction or enthusiasm that it makes Sam come off as a very generic character. The other voice acting is ok, and the soundtrack has a very dub step style sound now that grates at time.

Gameplay

Now we get to the biggest criticism I have with the game. Stealth has pretty much been thrown out the door in favor of non-suppressed firearms, and running around guns blazing.Splinter Cell Chao's Theory gave you this option but it also made completing the mission more than difficult than if you used stealth. The ability to select your load outs with non suppressed weapons and using them in mission would give ol Lambert a heart attack. The Prince of Persia comparison comes from Sam's new ability to leap and climb about like someone doing parkour. It gives you no reason to approach the mission with stealth when you can run around guns blazing and the game not even so much as smack your hand. When you can auto target three guys in a room and do this one shot instant kill move and meter can be filled up easily, what's the point? Or you can leap around the room, running up walls, making a hell of the racket with guards around. The game simply doesn't give a crap...

Graphics

At least the visuals in this game are fantastic. The 360 version gives you a option to install a HD texture pack that makes the game look even better. The lighting, and the animations are the best I have ever seen. Character models have a ton detail, and the frame-rate looks to be solid with maybe a few dips but nothing to bad. Its amazing how much has been pulled out of (at the time of the games release) creaking eight year old hardware.

Overall Splinter Cell Blacklist is a massive disappointment. If you're a fan of the original three games avoid this title and hope that Ubisoft can get their ducks in a row bring STEALTH back into Splinter Cell.
