Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 5

User Rating: 4 | Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 5 XONE

Alright I have played every single Tony Hawk game in the series. (Minus portable editions) With that said when I heard about Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 5 I was elated. It has been 8 years since the last Tony Hawk release and 13 years since the last Pro Skater release. For those of you who want a quick summary, let me summarize by saying DON'T BUY THIS GAME! For the rest of you who want a thorough review please stick around to read this. The nostalgia of once again playing Tony Hawk was nice... If for about thirty seconds before you realize you're playing a original Xbox game on an Xbox One. Sadly I'm not even referring to the graphics. The graphics are dated to say the least but I'm referring to here is content. To start I was expecting the levels to be massive in size to say the least. When I loaded in to the berrics I was not only bummed but down right pissed I dropped $60 on this game. The parks in the original Tony Hawk's Pro Skater (Mind you this game was for the original PlayStation) are bigger than these. I feel claustrophobic skating in these parks. I've seen cubicles bigger than these parks! The graphics look somewhere in between original Xbox and Xbox 360. This is a bitter disappointment mainly because of the power behind the most current generation of systems. I'm not going to dwell on the graphics because everybody has already expressed that point. On top of each level being smaller than a dingle berry there's only 8 f*cking levels! 8! I know you can create parks but seriously? 8! Again the lack of content makes this game worth $20 at best, and I paid $60 + Tax! I'm hoping Activision hands out at least 2 free DLC's for both poor quality and lack of content for this game. Now once I actually started playing I was decently happy with the feel of the play. The frame rate has really helped Tony Hawk. Alright now that's my only compliment for this game. The controls while simple are missing a few functions. Primarily I can't drop into half pipes by hitting the right trigger... this causes a lot of frustration because it makes it very hard to create large combo's, not that I haven't done it. Also when you hit a half pipe and move off the ramp the slam button correction works only about 20% of the time which causes you to lose an astronomic amount of points. The slam button is as useful as it is disastrous, you'll hit it to try and wall ride and it will slam your ass on the ground killing your combo. The specials are preset and are launched by hitting the left bumper, you then have a special grind, flip trick, grab, and manual. Downside is, the special meter only lasts about a whopping ten seconds, even if you keep your combo going. If the controls haven't made you slam your controller, congratulations you made it longer than I did! Next we have our free skate objectives which I don't think holds any value in progressing the game nor are challenging or fun. The only exception to this is collecting combo, which is a pain in the ass because of the slam button. The missions... o the missions. This is where I started screaming the 7 words you can't say on television, and since I can't say them on television I won't say them here either. The missions have almost no relativity to skateboarding, and this is a skateboarding game. Alright I understand that Tony Hawk isn't supposed to be realistic but at least make your missions at least somewhat respectable. Why the hell is any skateboarder trying to knock beach balls out of a pool? Why is a skateboarder trying to knock toxic waste barrels into a pool? Why would a skateboarder survive hitting one toxic waste barrel into a pool? Simply I have no clue! This is frustrating enough without adding absurd difficulty into the tasks. When you have a collection mission there is no pattern or path in which you would logically grab them all within 45 seconds to acquire the sick rating. This just made my face turn red. However the #1 thing that made me scream until I shit my pants was the combo missions. Activision please explain to me how I'm supposed to put up a 150,000 point combo without manualing?!?!?! NO F*CKING LOGIC! Then you can have friends help you complete mis... oh no you can only have friends help you with some missions. The only free skate with friends is utterly useless, and the game modes also lack content. The online sharing of parks doesn't even work. This sounds like Neversoft released a game that doesn't work. In summary broken controls, poor graphics, no content, broken game modes, lackluster existing content, and useless modes. The best hope for this game is that Activision recalls this garbage and gives everyone their money back.
