A good shooter with great graphics that dares something new

User Rating: 7 | Vanquish PS3

Vanquish is a game totally over the top with a decent, but not too deep of a story and a lot of shooting. You get a basic tutorial before getting thrown out into a crazy story with over the top sequences and firefights. Characters are over the top aswell. With enemies coming from everywhere and evil villains trying to destroy the whole colony you are there to protect.

The shooting and overall gameplay in this game is totally over the top and excellent at it. The shooting mechanics in this game are really tight and feel really good in this game. The different weapons feel good and compliment the game style. Fast action and lots of robots running towards you. The boss fights are really well done and don't feel too hard to go through, but they also give you a feeling of accomplishment when you finally bring down these big bosses. They are also a lot of fun to take down and the quick time events don't seem forced and there aren't too many of them either. The enemies also have a good variety, so you never feel like you are encountering the same enemies over and over again. It also changes pace a few times during the singleplayer story to let you breath and continue. The boss fights are also really fun to play.

The whole storyline is more in the background giving you something to do and telling you why you are doing it during stages of the game. It isn't the deepest story in a game, but it isn't a shallow one either. It's good enough to be explored and to be taken seriously. All of the over the top sequences also tells you not to take this game so seriously, but just have fun with it.

The sound design for the game is works when it is suppose to, but doesn't really stand out either. The voice over work doesn't get a lot to work with during the game, and most of the cutscenes or dialogues are pretty short. But they make the best out of it when there is a conversation on screen

The graphics look pretty good in this game and it helps with a distinct art to the game to stand out to other third person shooters. The overall design works very well with the graphics and they compliment each other very well. The character animation and the cutscenes look stunning when you get a good look at them, and seeing stuff blow up in slow motion looks just as good.

This game doesn't have a long singleplayer. It has some replay value if you really want to collect everything, get all achievments and try at harder levels. But it's not as good as value as perhaps other games, with only around 4-5 hours long of a singleplayer story length
