Captain America: Civil War Star Discusses "Interesting Question" Marvel Movie Asks

The spring of 2016 is shaping up to be the season of superhero showdowns. First up we have Zack Snyder's DC adventure Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in March, followed a month later by Marvel's Captain America: Civil War. The third Captain America movie will see rival hero teams on opposing sides of a debate over government registration of superhero activity. Now star Paul Bettany has revealed some more about the film's themes.

In an interview with Collider, Bettany, who plays The Vision, spoke about the underlying political dimension of the movie. "It’s going to be a lot of fun", he said. "I think it’s really interesting, the way that a huge, epic superhero extravaganza is discussing a really interesting question, which is about people unilaterally going into other people’s countries and their intervention there. It’s actually an interesting thing to talk about in a massive forum like that."

Bettany also went on to discuss his character, who made his debut in this year's Avengers: Age of Ultron. "There are so many places for him to go," he said. "I think he's very interested in what it means to be human and what love is. The only way one can guarantee one's loyalty is love. Loyalty is beyond logic, really. Logic doesn't really provide for loyalty. If your logic changes suddenly and things not make sense, you can alter your allegiance, but love stops you from being able to do that."

Last month, Daniel Brühl, who plays the evil Nazi scientist Baron Zemo in Civil War, revealed that his character would differ in appearance from the comic books. "He does not wear the mask," he said, referring to Zemo's distinctive purple hood. "You would be surprised, it's different than what you'd think. It's loosely connected to this character."

Captain America: Civil War is directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, who helped turn the second Captain America movie, 2014's The Winter Soldier, into a $700 million smash. It stars Chris Evans, Robert Downey, Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Elizabeth Olsen, and Paul Rudd.
