The upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean movie is a reboot, series producer Jerry Bruckheimer has confirmed. Asked by ComicBook about the next Top Gun and Pirates movies, Bruckheimer said it's "hard to tell" which franchise will return to screens first, and in the same response, he also confirmed the Pirates film will be a reboot of the franchise. Some wondered if the new film could be a follow-up to Dead Men Tell No Tales or some other extension of the series.

"You don't know how they come together. You just don't know. Because with Top Gun you have an actor who is iconic and brilliant [Tom Cruise]. And how many movies he does before he does Top Gun, I can't tell you. But we're gonna reboot Pirates, so that is easier to put together because you don't have to wait for certain actors."

Earlier this year, it was reported that a follow-up to Top Gun: Maverick was in the works, which was no big surprise given the 2022 film earned about $1.5 billion globally.

As for the Pirates series, writer Craig Mazin (The Last of Us, Chernobyl) said he was amazed Disney bought the script he co-wrote with Pirates series scribe Ted Elliott. "We pitched it and thought there's no way they're buying it, it's too weird. And they did!" Mazin said.

The new movie will be the first new entry in the series since 2017's Dead Men Tell No Tales. As of yet, no casting announcements have been made, nor do we know who might direct.

Another Pirates movie has been rumored as well, this being a reboot starring Margot Robbie and written by Christina Hodson (Birds of Prey). Robbie said this movie, which would have a "female-led" approach, is not moving ahead at Disney. However, series producer Jerry Bruckheimer said the movie is not totally dead but instead it could be released after the Mazin and Elliott film.

The original Pirates movies featured Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow, but whether or not the controversial Depp returns for any new Pirates films is unknown. The original Pirates movies together grossed more than $4 billion worldwide.

Depp and ex-wife Amber Heard settled a high-profile court case, with Depp found to have defamed Heard and ordered to pay $2 million. Heard was found to have defamed Depp and was ordered to pay $10 million. Addressing Depp's future in the Pirates series, Bruckheimer told The Independent that the actor's return is not yet decided.

The Pirates of the Caribbean movie series is based on the Disney's theme park ride. Disney also turned its Jungle Cruise ride into a movie with The Rock and Emily Blunt.
