"We need to know where he is."

With all the sequels, adaptations, remakes, and reboots due to hit cinemas in 2016, it's exciting when a trailer for a great-looking original film appears. This is the case with Midnight Special, a new sci-fi thriller with definite overtones of the classic sci-fi of Steven Spielberg and John Carpenter. Check it out below:

The film stars Man of Steel's Michael Shannon, together with Joel Edgerton, Kirsten Dunst, and Adam Driver, who will be seen next month as the villainous Kylo Ren in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. It is written and directed by Jeff Nichols, whose most recent film was the highly acclaimed Mud, starring Matthew McConaughey.

In an interview with ScreenDaily, Nichols spoke about the influences on Midnight Special, which focuses upon a government hunt for a young boy with mysterious powers. "My next one is a sci-fi chase film," he said. "However absurd that sounds, it's more grounded than Mud. I really wanted to make a 1980s John Carpenter film like Starman. I love the way those films look."

Midnight Special will hit cinemas on March 18, 2016.
