LOS ANGELES--Contrary to a handful of misleading Twitter updates, Twister Metal director David Jaffe made good on his Interactive Achievement Awards promise of a new installment in his car combat franchise. Closing out its 2010 Electronic Entertainment Expo press conference today, Sony announced that a new Twisted Metal game will arrive exclusively for the PlayStation 3 in 2011.

According to Jaffe, who left Sony in 2007 to cofound his own independent outfit Eat Sleep Play, the new Twisted Metal development team will include many of the series' original developers. Jaffe, who also directed the original God of War, offered an on-stage demo for the multiplayer component of the game.

The demo opened with an apparently playable helicopter mowing down a car, which was cruising through a city environment. Jaffe also showed off the Nuke gameplay mode, an objective-based multiplayer scenario in which players join a faction and attempt to hold a location long enough to launch a warhead against the opposing side.

The new Twisted Metal's multiplayer component will feature two-player split-screen action, as well as online battles. There will also be an as-yet-undetailed campaign mode.

Closing out his appearance on Sony's stage, Jaffe said that Twisted Metal will be playable at Sony's booth on the E3 show floor. Check back with GameSpot's continuing coverage of E3 2010 for more on the game.
