Yesterday in Tokyo, Sony officially announced its latest on-the-go gaming device, currently codenamed the NGP (Next Generation Portable). The new piece of tech sports robust specs and will be out by year's end supported by software from popular franchises like Uncharted, Resistance, and Call of Duty. However, eager gamers are likely concerned about one particular specifically…its price.

Sony has yet to officially price the NGP.
Sony has yet to officially price the NGP.

According to Electronic Entertainment Design and Research's Jesse Divnich, speaking with GamesIndustry.biz, the NGP could potentially sell at a price between $300 and $350. Divnich also said Sony is now holding the reins of portable entertainment and that the NGP will be emblematic of the portable gaming sphere, whether the device succeeds or not.

"The market is ripe for portable high-end gaming. The NGP will be a serious threat to all forms of portable entertainment," he said. "After seeing the specs today, if the NGP can't succeed, it is clear that the portable gaming landscape has forever changed. The future of portable entertainment is in the hands of Sony."

Additionally, Sony's Europe boss Andrew House told Eurogamer that the NGP will be available at an unspecified "affordable" price.

"I can't put a ballpark on it in terms of figures, but what I would say is that we will shoot for an affordable price that's appropriate for the handheld gaming space," he said.
