Remedy Entertainment has announced that Alan Wake 2 has sold 1.3 million copies as of February 2024. In a press release shedding more light on the game's post-launch performance, Remedy said that the sequel sold 1 million units by December 2023 and is now the fastest-selling game released by the developer.

"Alan Wake 2 sold over 50% more copies and over three times more digital copies in its first two months than Control did in its first four months," Remedy explained. "Since its release in 2019, Control has sold over 4 million units, generating net revenue--shareable revenue between Remedy and a publishing partner, excluding taxes and platform fees--of approximately 100 million Euros. A great game can generate excellent long tail sales, and we expect this to be the case with Alan Wake 2 as well."

Now Playing: Alan Wake 2 Review

Interestingly, Alan Wake 2 isn't profitable yet--it launched as a digital-only game with an MSRP of $50 on PC and $60 on consoles in October 2023--but Remedy CEO Tero Virtala explained "the game has already recouped a significant part" of its development and marketing expenses. "We now have two established franchises: Control and Alan Wake, which are linked through the Remedy Connected Universe. Growing and expanding these franchises will be a key part of our future," Virtala said.

Virtala added that Alan Wake 2's performance has helped to support Remedy's other projects like Control 2 and its Max Payne remakes. Alan Wake 2 received its new game plus mode in December 2023 and will expand in the future with two expansions. The first one is focused on Night Springs, the game's Twilight Zone-inspired TV show, and the second one will link up with Remedy's Control.

A critical hit, Alan Wake 2 was one of GameSpot's best games of the year, earning a rare score of 10. "Alan Wake 2 achieves virtually everything developer Remedy Entertainment set out to do," Mark Delaney wrote in GameSpot's Alan Wake 2 review. "It's a game that feels novel and risky that is executed with confidence and a clarity of vision."
