Animal Crossing Snowflake Guide: How To Get All Snowflake DIY Recipes

Here's how to collect and craft with the delicate pieces of snow.

Snow has finally hit Northern Hemisphere islands in Animal Crossing: New Horizons and that means players can find snowflakes floating in the wind. Players will be able to catch snowflakes and build snowmen, which will lead to new winter-themed DIY recipes, up until January 6.

Building the perfect snowman will get you a number of new DIYs, but finding the recipes for snowflake items, including an incredible new wallpaper, isn't as simple. This guide will show you how to find the recipes and get you on track to building your own personal winter wonderland.

How Do I Catch Snowflakes?

Snowflakes will be all over your island.
Snowflakes will be all over your island.

Snowflakes will be drifting all over your island, just like the maple leaves did last month. You'll need to swing your net at them to capture them and put them in your inventory. Be careful though--missing with one or two swings will make the snowflakes disappear. Plan those swings carefully.

There are both regular sized and large snowflakes. The large ones are given to you by snowmen after you've built them while the normal ones can be caught around your town (large snowflakes can be caught as well). These snowflakes will be used in a number of recipes--so be sure to collect a lot of them.

How Do I Get Snowflake Recipes?

This is the hard part. Like many other seasonal recipes, snowflake DIYs can only be received by shooting down present balloons that float over your town at specific time intervals. It's annoying as balloons don't always give you recipes, sometimes dropping random pieces of furniture, clothing items, bells, and various resources instead.

There is a way to farm balloon presents, however. First you'll want to figure out which side of the island they're coming from--which changes after sunset. Figure that out and then position yourself at whichever beach the balloons spawn at.

Balloons spawn every fourth or ninth minute, so at times like 12:04, 5:49, 11:19, and so on. Run up and down your beach, keeping at eye out for balloons. They'll spawn at those times but may not be visible until they drifted onscreen. Some of the balloons you shoot down will be filled with recipes. This is an annoying process but it's currently the only way to get Animal Crossing: New Horizons' special seasonal DIYs.
