Avowed--Obisidan Entertainment's ambitious first-person RPG--has been in development for several years, and the studio was able to show off its progress during the Xbox Games Showcase on June 11.

The fantasy role-playing game is set for a 2024 release on Xbox Series X|S, PC via Steam, and day one on Xbox Game Pass. The brand-new gameplay trailer showcases a multitude of first-person abilities, including spellcasting, sword-wielding, flintlock firearms, and more.

"You're either here to save us or destroy us," a character says in the trailer, suggesting that the people in Avowed are afraid of the power the protagonist wields. The trailer also provided a look at a series of lush environments, as well as fantasy monsters, skeleton enemies, and gruesome-looking bears.

"First-person combat has been a huge focus for us," Obsidian studio head, Feargus Urquhart said in an Xbox post. "We’ve incorporated a host of ways for players to fight the flora and fauna of the Living Lands. You will have swords, shields, pistols, magical spells, and more at your disposal, including the ability to dual wield, creating a vast number of combinations to choose from."

Like Pillars of Eternity and its sequel, Avowed takes place in the fantasy world Eora. The game looks to be designed somewhat in the style of the Elder Scrolls games, if early footage is anything to go by--it was announced prior to Microsoft acquiring Bethesda, and Obsidian was the studio behind Fallout: New Vegas, so it has considerable experience in the genre.
