Battlefield: Bad Company 2 sells 2.3 million in two weeks
Electronic Arts' and DICE's shooter opens big, on track to be March's top seller; 2.9 million player hours logged in last day alone.
Though it didn't match the huge opening numbers of rival Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is keeping a lot of shooter fans company--2.3 million shooter fans, to be exact. Today publisher Electronic Arts announced that the game has gone double-platinum in the two weeks since its March 2 launch on the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3.
To help tout the milestone, EA and its Swedish studio DICE announced some of Bad Company 2's multiplayer statistics. To date, more than 43 million weapons and 81 billion points have been unlocked in the game's online multiplayer mode, which has also seen 230,000 peak concurrent users. In the day preceding this morning's press release, some 2.9 million player hours were logged on the game's servers.
Speaking of servers, part of Bad Company 2's success is due to the fact that DICE supports dedicated servers for the PC edition of the game. EA played up the difference between its title and Modern Warfare 2, which abolished dedicated servers in favor of IWnet, widely believed to be a precursor to a subscription-based service for the game.
