Cyberpunk 2077 Delay May Be Due To PS4, Xbox One Versions

The ambitious RPG is said to be running well on PC and next-gen consoles, but the current generation appears to be struggling.

Cyberpunk 2077 recently got one more delay, a slight push while the team at CD Projekt Red puts the finishing touches on its day zero patch. Recent comments from CEO Adam Kiciński suggest the trouble is getting the game to run properly on current-generation consoles. (You can read our thoughts on the PC version in our Cyberpunk 2077 review.)

"The game is ready for the PC and runs great on the next-gen consoles, and could be shipped on the scheduled date on those platforms," Kiciński said in an investor call. "However, even though the game has been certified on the current gens by both Sony and Microsoft, some very final optimization processes for such a massive and complex game require a bit of additional time."

From the comments, it sounds as if the game has passed certification on current-gen consoles, but CDPR isn't satisfied with its performance yet. He also noted that the team is effectively working on nine versions of the game:

  • PC
  • Xbox One
  • Xbox One X
  • PS4
  • PS4 Pro
  • compatible releases on Xbox Series S and Series X
  • PS5 compatible release
  • Stadia

Since the games are playable through backwards-compatibility on the next-gen consoles, you can probably count on better performance for those. CDPR also plans to release free next-gen upgrades sometime in 2021.

"And last but not least, despite all the effort taken to limit the impact of Covid-19 on our work, the current epidemiological situation at this final stage of the project is not making things any easier," he said.

Cyberpunk has gained a reputation for delays, having suffered multiple delays throughout 2020 after an already long-wait for release. This latest delay caused some consternation among fans, even including death threats. The new release date is set for December 10. For more details, check out our Cyberpunk 2077 preorder guide.
