Dwarf Fortress Finally Has Graphics: Here's The First Look

After 14 years, Dwarf Fortress is getting an official visual upgrade and a Steam release.

Dwarf Fortress, the incredibly complex strategy and simulation game originally released in 2006, is finally getting a graphical overhaul that transforms the previous ASCII style to something more traditional. And during the Guerrilla Collective showcase's first day, developer Bay 12 Games showed it off for the first time.

Bay 12 Games has brought in dedicated modders of Dwarf Fortress to help with the graphical overhaul, which is seeking to replace many of the text-heavy elements from the original with visual elements that help convey information better. The walkthrough below shows dwarfs in different clothing colors and styles, as well as well-defined pathways, settlements, and more.

Now Playing: Guerrilla Collective Live Showcase Day 1

Dwarf Fortress simulates a civilization over hundreds of in-game years, letting you influence how it unfolds. Maps are procedurally generated, but how you choose to deploy settlements within them can lead to surprising results.

The graphical overhaul is still a work-in-progress, with several elements still communicated through text. The final product will launch on Steam in the future.
