The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild posited a completely different blueprint for the open-world genre back in 2017, and it's taken three years for the gaming industry to take those ideas and run with them. Immortals Fenyx Rising one of the biggest games yet to deliver its own take on many of Breath of the Wild's most interesting ideas, and now that the reviews are out, check out the roundup below to see what critics think of this mythological adventure.

Heavily indebted to Greek mythology, Immortals Fenyx Rising is an open-world adventure game coming December 3 that's based around exploration and combat. Overall, the reviewers praise the game's artstyle and worldbuilding, while decrying its derivative puzzle design and focus on traditional open-world activities. While some reviewers clearly enjoyed the game, they opine that the game ultimately has more in common with Ubisoft's usual open-world games than perhaps its developer would like to admit.

GameSpot - 7/10

"Immortals Fenyx Rising is far from perfect--but it is good. It stumbles frequently as it explores Greek myths through a new lens, its best features are borrowed, and for as large and fun as its world is, it always feels like you're on a guided tour instead of really exploring it. But even as it lives in the shadow of better games, its puzzles, combat, and open-world loop come together often enough for me to not only see it through for a few dozen hours, but also want to keep filling out its almighty checklist, even if it lead me by the nose most of the way through." - Suriel Vazquez [Full Review]

Eurogamer - Unscored

"I feel for Immortals a bit. Blame Covid, blame budgets, blame Ubisoft, blame the paradoxically thrifty, endlessly repurposing way the publisher makes all its huge, expansive, generous games, but Immortals never really finds its own voice until the very end. It's a skillful, lovingly made product, but it is unmistakably a product, and the best games in this genre all feel like genuine adventures." - Christian Donlan [Full Review]

Game Informer - 9/10

"Immortals contains all the ingredients I want from an epic, open-world adventure steeped in mythology. With empowering combat, rewarding exploration, and a story that shines a spotlight on its characters through humor, Immortals Fenyx Rising leverages its myriad inspirations to discover its own identity and deliver an outstanding open-world experience." - Brian Shea [Full Review]

PC Gamer - 72/100

Immortals is easy to like. It has an infectious energy, a great sense of humor, and a world that is full of colour and life. I just wish the mechanical stuff underpinning everything was more fine-tuned. The unsatisfying, weightless character movement is a real letdown, because there's no getting away from it. This is a game where you're constantly running, flying, climbing, and riding on horseback. But its unique take on Greek mythology, memorable characters, and fun quests do their best to make up for it, even if it doesn't always pull it off. - Andy Kelly [Full Review]

IGN - 7/10

Immortals Fenyx Rising gives us a gorgeous world to explore, filled with mythological beasts, deities, and powers to wield. Its combat is satisfying, with plenty of choice in upgrades, while its central characters, comedic tone, and storytelling are a real highlight. Seeing Fenyx’s saga through to the end, with amusing commentary from Zeus, Prometheus, and other gods along the way, is a treat. Its Achilles Heel, though, is that so much of the puzzle gameplay feels like going through the motions instead of clever challenges. In the end, I wish Immortals Fenyx Rising had tried to soar just a little higher on the wings of ambition. - Cam Shea [Full Review]
