Last Of Us Dev's Tribute To Wife Made It Into The TV Show

"I'm still reeling from this," the developer said.

Comments

A developer who worked on the 2013 original The Last of Us game has reacted to the Season 1 finale of the HBO show, which included the same Easter egg he put in the game all those years ago in tribute to his wife. This story contains spoilers about The Last of Us franchise.

When Joel and Ellie meet the giraffe and share a nice moment (before the heartbreak and violence to come), they are standing at an overlook with a baseball field in the distance. Developer Peter Field named the field "Bethany Clare Field" for his wife, and HBO included this in the show, too.

"I'm still reeling from this. A silly Easter egg I put in the original The Last of Us game has somehow survived the transition to live action TV. It's blurry but it's definitely there!!!" Field said. "I can't imagine the HBO team knew the name of the baseball field was a tribute to my wife."

The position of the Bethany Clare Field sign was actually shifted for the TV show to be more in focus, leading Field to believe that HBO might actually have known all along what it was doing.

Something else to know about the scene from the HBO series is that the giraffe is real--he is a male giraffe from a Canada zoo named Nabo.

Field worked on the Last of Us and Uncharted franchises at Naughty Dog before leaving to join another Sony studio, Media Molecule, to work on the game Dreams.

The Last of Us Season 1 wrapped up with a gripping and heartbreaking finale. The story will continue in Season 2, which will adapt 2020's The Last of Us Part II, and a third season could follow.

As for the game series, Naughty Dog is making a new The Last of Us multiplayer game. After that, Naughty Dog might make The Last of Us Part III, or it might not.
