PlayStation's Super Bowl Commercial Wasn't What Fans Were Hoping For

The new commercial didn't contain any announcements or juicy information about PlayStation.

PlayStation's new "Live From PS5" ad campaign continued on Sunday night with a special commercial for the Super Bowl. It didn't air on TV with the rest of the trailers and commercials--at least not in the US--but people who followed PlayStation Canada's Instagram account got to see the new video. Unfortunately, for some, it wasn't the kind of video they were hoping to see.

PlayStation Canada promoted the Super Bowl spot earlier last week, telling fans to tune in to the big game for some kind of video involving the God of War series and Fimbulwinter descending onto Arizona, the site of Super Bowl 57, to mark the beginning of the end of days. Given the association with God of War, some fans were expecting to see an announcement for God of War Ragnarok or something else for the wider PlayStation brand.

That didn't happen, though, as the video was instead another entry in PlayStation's Live From PS5 series, which is a take on news broadcasts. In the video, Kratos and Atreus race onto the field to try to stop the end of days, Ragnarok, from happening. The video also hypes up other PlayStation-related franchises like Gran Turismo and Final Fantasy, going on to say that strange events happening in the world may be explained by an "increase in activity on PS5."

The first installment in the Live From PS5 campaign generated a lot of discussion because it seemingly teased a new Uncharted game. Or it may have been playful teasing at nothing. While some might have been hoping for an announcement of God of War Ragnarok DLC or an expansion, that was always wishful thinking, as the developer said there will be no add-on content.

The new Live From PS5 ad campaign revving into gear right now makes sense, as the PS5 is now readily back in stock, so people should be able to walk into a store or order a system online.

In 2013, Sony released a God of War Ascension ad during the Super Bowl, but like this one, it aired online--and not on TV during the Super Bowl broadcast.

As for when PlayStation fans might get some actual announcements, it's been reported that the next State of Play event is coming up soon, to be followed by a bigger event before E3 in June.

Super Bowl 57 saw the Kansas City Chiefs upset the Philadelphia Eagles by a score of 38-35 thanks to a last-minute field goal. EA's Madden Super Bowl prediction got it wrong, yet again.
