First announced during 2022's Geeked Week, Castlevania: Nocturne serves as a spin-off to the original Netflix Castlevania animated series, which concluded its four-season run in 2021. The new series will focus on the younger Richter Belmont--a pivotal character in several Castlevania games who is seen here sporting his trademark blue outfit in both styles of what Ayima Kojima gave him in Symphony of the Night and his shonen anime appearance that was created by Kouji Yamada, Toshiharu Furukawa, and Reika Bando for Rondo of Blood.

Since then, Richter has appeared in several Castlevania video games, even becoming a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. It's unclear if Nocturne is adapting any particular story from Richter's history, as this series takes place during the French Revolution. Check out the first look below for Castlevania: Nocturne.

"France, 1792 - the height of the French Revolution. In a remote part of western France, the counter-revolutionary aristocracy has forged an alliance with a terrifying Vampire Messiah, who promises to ‘eat the sun’ and unleash an army of vampires and nightcreatures to crush the revolution and enslave humanity," the official show synopsis reads. "Annette, a sorceress from the Caribbean, seeks out Richter Belmont, last descendant of the long-fabled family of vampire hunters, to lead the resistance."

Now, it's unclear even with the footage if this Annette is the same Annette from both Rondo of Blood, who eventually becomes Richter's lover--though Annette is usually not billed as a sorceress, but actually his occasional enemy.

Given the often convoluted Belmont family timeline, we know Richter is not Trevor's son now as it was long assumed, but actually Simon's grandson.

Castlevania: Nocturne was created by Clive Bradley, with Kevin Kolde serving as showrunner. Produced by Project 51 Productions with animation services provided by Powerhouse Animation, the show is set to keep up with the previous Castlevania series before it and deliver a bloody good time.

Castlevania: Nocturne arrives exclusively on Netflix September 28.
