Rogue Legacy was one of the biggest indie success stories of 2013, combining Castlevania-style platforming and slashing with a generational roguelike gimmick. Now, seven years later, developer Cellar Door Games is on the verge of releasing the sequel into Early Access on PC.

Rogue Legacy 2 will come to Steam and the Epic Games Store in Early Access on July 23. According to the game's Steam page, the current plan is for the game to officially release around a year from then, in 2021. The initial version of the game will include two of the game's five-to-seven biomes, as well as more than 700+ randomized rooms. As with its predecessor, Rogue Legacy 2 gives you the choice of different heirs at the start of each run, each with their own weapon, armor, and quirks.

Rogue Legacy 2 comes a little more than two years after Cellar Door's last game, Full Metal Furies. Though the game received warm reviews--including an 8/10 in GameSpot's Full Metal Furies review from our critic Jordan Ramée--it never quite achieved the same sales success as the original Rogue Legacy. In an interview, the developers labelled it a "pretty massive failure." Given the pedigree and popularity of the original, it seems unlikely that this sequel will suffer the same fate.
