Star Wars: Dawn Of The Jedi Gets New Screenwriter To Work With Logan Director

Lucasfilm has lined up a new screenwriter to take on Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi with director James Mangold.

Director James Mangold's Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi is one step closer to happening. Via The Hollywood Reporter, Beau Willimon has signed on to co-write the script for Dawn of the Jedi, which will explore the origins of the Force and the Jedi 25,000 years before the original Star Wars movies.

Willimon is no stranger to Star Wars, thanks to his stint on Andor Season 1, including the acclaimed 10th episode of the season, One Way Out. Willimon's previous credits include Netflix's House of Cards as well as The Ides of March and Mary Queen of Scots.

Dawn of the Jedi, which is still technically the working title of the film, was announced at Star Wars Celebration London in April 2023. During that event, Mangold compared it to Hollywood's classic biblical epics.

“When I first started talking to Kathy [Kennedy] about doing one of these pictures, what occurred to me was thinking about what kind of genre of movie within Star Wars I wanted to do,” said Mangold. “And I thought about a biblical epic, like a Ten Commandments, about the dawning of the Force. Where did the Force come from, when did we discover it, when did we learn how to use it?”

Lucasfilm hasn't set a date for Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi, nor are there any cast members lined up. However, THR's report indicates that Dawn of the Jedi will likely be Mangold's next film after he finishes his Bob Dylan biopic featuring Timothée Chalamet. Mangold is also attached to direct DC Studios' Swamp Thing movie at some point in the future. Meanwhile, the next Star Wars film, The Mandalorian & Grogu, was recently given a May 22, 2026 release date.
