Superman Star Nation Fillion Is Embracing The Green Lantern's Flaws

Superman's Nathan Fillion is looking forward to stepping into the role of DC's most notorious Green Lanterns.

Although Nathan Fillion has lent his voice to Green Lantern Hal Jordan in animation, his upcoming role in the new Superman film will be as Guy Gardner, another Green Lantern from Earth who just might be one of the biggest jerks in the world. In that way, Gardner is more like Fillion's Captain Hammer from Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog rather than any of his more recent comic book roles. Regardless, Fillion told Collider that Gardner's character flaws are some of the qualities that attracted him to the part.

"Guy Gardner is 90% flawed and doesn’t care," said Fillion. "That’s one of his flaws. I think there’s a real freedom in playing that. So, for a guy who likes to play flaws and flawed people, Guy Gardner is a gold mine."

"The reality is that people have flaws," added Fillion. "We all have quirks. We all have vulnerabilities... Everybody’s got something, and I love to lean into those faults and flaws. It’s what makes people real and what allows audiences to relate, because we all know what that is. We all have our own. We witness it in other people."

Fillion also revealed that he learned about his new role while attending the premiere party for The Suicide Squad in 2021.

"We were actually at the premiere party after Suicide Squad and [James Gunn] was in a huge crowd of people," related Fillion. "We saw each other in the crowd and I congratulated him, 'Oh, my God, that was amazing. It's so great.' He goes, 'Hey, did Peter [Safran] tell you what we've got for you next?' I said, 'No, he hasn't said.' He looked around like someone was gonna be listening. We were in a throng of people, but he leaned over and said, 'You’re gonna be Guy Gardner.'"

Superman will fly into theaters on Friday, July 11, 2025.
