What were the best-selling new physical games in the US for April 2016? Now we know, thanks to the NPD Group, which has released its sales report for last month. Just like April's PlayStation digital game sales, both Dark Souls III and Ratchet & Clank top the list.

MLB The Show 16, Tom Clancy's The Division, and Grand Theft Auto V round out the top five, and you can see the full top ten list at the bottom of this article.

The report says Dark Souls III's sales nearly doubled that of Dark Souls II when adjusting for the number of days it had on the market. Despite its strong performance, last month's sales are down by 21 percent to $203.9 million from $256.7 million when compared to the same period last year. Mortal Kombat X's April 2015 sales alone exceeded all of April 2016's new launches by 18 percent.

NPD Group analyst Liam Callahan says that this past April "saw declines in seventh generation software of $27.9 million exceed the $22 million decrease in sales relative to eighth generation."

Callahan said the PS4's Ratchet & Clank had the best launch of any game in the series when adjusted for the number of days sold. He noted that it "recaptured success not seen for the franchise" since the PS2.

A Nintendo spokesperson shared a statement, noting that if all games were broken up by individual platforms, then Star Fox Zero, Bravely Second: End Layer, and Pokken Tournament would place at the number 6, 9, and 10 spots respectively. Star Fox Zero was the 10th best-selling game last month when based on overall sales.

Microsoft's CVP of Xbox Marketing, Mike Nichols, said in a statment that "April 2016 was the best month in history for global engagement on Xbox One," thanks to games like Quantum Break, The Division, and Dark Souls III.

"We received a strong response to the Gears of War 4 Versus Multiplayer Beta last month, which lasted two weeks and attracted more than 1.6 million unique players who helped us test and shape what is expected to be our biggest game of the year," Nichols said.

"Gaming on Windows continues to grow with Quantum Break and Ori and the Blind Forest: Definitive Edition launching on Windows 10 in April and over nine billion hours of gameplay logged on Windows 10 since launch. It’s a great time for the industry, and we thank our fans for their continued support. We look forward to sharing more on our vision and plans for continuing to deliver the best gaming experience on Xbox One, Windows 10 and Xbox Live this year at E3 in June."

When asked, Sony declined to provide its regular NPD statement.

Last month, The Division topped the list, while Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 slid from two to nine.
