Unannounced Twisted Metal Live-Service Game Canceled - Report

The Horizon online game will continue, however.

A Twisted Metal live-service game has reportedly been canceled, but the Horizon online game is still in development.

According to Bloomberg, along with Sony's massive layoff of 900 employees, the company has also canceled a live-service Twisted Metal game. It was reportedly early development but wasn't given the full greenlight over at Firesprite, which also suffered an unspecified number of layoffs.

However, the Horizon online game is reportedly still in the works, even though developer Guerrilla Games was impacted by the layoffs as well. Other big studios within the PlayStation portfolio experienced layoffs too, including Naughty Dog and Insomniac Games. Even Sony's London has completely shut down.

Sony has made major investments in expanding into live-services and multimedia. The Twisted Metal adaptation on Peacock was a critical success, which makes this news more disappointing. Back in December, Naughty Dog canceled The Last of Us online multiplayer game, making Sony's venture into live-service games look shaky. However, Helldivers 2 became a huge hit this month as a PS5 console exclusive, so it's up in the air whether Sony's live-service investment will be worth it in the long run.
