"And that is where our story begins."

Having tackled aliens, fairies, sharks, and dinosaurs at various points in his career, it is time for Steven Spielberg to move onto another childhood favourite: the giant. Or more specifically, the Big Friendly Giant, the title character in Roald Dahl's classic 1982 book The BFG. Spielberg's film adaptation is due next summer, and the first trailer has been released. Check it out here:

The BFG stars Ruby Barnhill as Sophie, an orphan girl who befriends the BFG and has to face the menace of other, far less friendly giants. Mark Rylance, who was seen alongside Tom Hanks in Spielberg's recent thriller Bridge of Spies, voices the BFG.

In a recent interview with the Toronto Star, Spielberg spoke about his decision to cast Rylance, after a single day's work on Bridge of Spies. "I knew he was my BFG," he said. "He's such a consummate actor and such a deeply sensitive human being."

The BFG opens on July 1, 2016. It also stars Bill Hader, Penelope Wilton, Rebecca Hall, and Jemaine Clement.
