It builds off of Origins but also takes away

User Rating: 6 | Assassin's Creed Odyssey XONE

Odyssey continues to build up what Origins had left off. The RPG/level-based system is still there along with the redefined combat. Yet at the same time, There also seems to be a bit of a takeaway from it that doesn't exactly put it on the level of what Origins was.

With Odyssey, The map is far bigger than what it was in Origins. With far more open water to travel, Be prepared for Black Flag style fun. There's a lot more emphasis on improving your boat and crew but honestly not a whole lot to do in open waters. You mainly just use the ship to travel to these small islands scattered across the map and that's pretty disappointing. At least give us something to do on these lengthy travels from island to island rather than just an open sea of nothingness.

It's a total contrast to the land areas that are full of things to do to the point of it being just repetitive and annoying. A lot of these points of interest feature just a single objective and are clearly just placed there to provide filler as a big complaint about Origins was that 1/3 of the map was just empty space with nothing to do. So I get trying to add a bit more depth to the game but they did it to the point of I put nearly 50 hours into and still have a good 1/3 to fully explore. It's pretty frustrating as I only spent 40 hours completing Origins. And it certainly doesn't help that every POI and objective is almost exactly the same. It makes grinding out the game even worst.

And to couple with that repetitiveness is the fact that every area in the game seems to lack variety. It's very much just a copy and paste for many of the places you visit throughout the game and that's pretty disappointing. It takes away from how great this game looks. I mean I get it being a little repetitive considering how large the map is but it's to the point where it actually starts to take away from the overall value and that is a real bummer.

Sadly, this doesn't stop the negative train I am on as the story was an absolute bore. It's instantly forgettable and ranks among the worst of the series IMO. I think the lack of a compelling villain really takes away from it. There was no real clear goal or objective, At least not one you really wanted to focus on when exploring the map. It's the kind of game where you just play it, there's no need to really beat the story before doing anything else.

Overall: 6/10
Odyssey does a lot of good but when it comes down to it, It's a repetitive mess. It becomes a total bore to play about 25 hours and just finishing it will suck the soul out of you.
