Shallow and frustrating gameplay in an otherwise great game

User Rating: 7 | Assassin's Creed Odyssey PC

Huge game with insane graphics for its time set in the ancient greek era and featuring the Peloponnesian war - a superb period with many great historical characters.

Graphics: 10 Fantastic graphics for 2018.

Atmosphere: 6 - OK atmosphere overall, though it is all kept on a rather superficial level and at least for me, I was unable to dive deep into the game, the setting, the history, perhaps due to the huge amount of unnecessary side quests and also the huge map with the rather repetitive tasks and shallow general gameplay

Story: 7,5 - It kept me interested until the last bit. The other aspects of the game made me rather want to hastily finish it, so I wasn't as bound to the game and it's story as I would've liked to be.

Sound: 7. Not really worth remembering, but not bad either - it was good for the game's historical and geographical setting.

Gameplay: 4. The whole gameplay was constructed based on free mobile game tactics: You feel no real progress with your character and the game gets worse with each level-up and you tend to wish to stop levelling up. And don't get me started on the difficulty of leveling up and especially on the gear upgrade which require hardcore grinding. The equippable weapons and armor looked amazing, but the stats were rather dull, having mostly the same ratings based on the rarity which include normal, rare and legendary. The worst part is that they provided me with legendary equipment from the Ubisoft Club (or whatever the name was) which did not fit at all into the classical greek era and the character looked like a sci-fi tank right at the start of the game. And you cannot get rid of those weapons&armors. I hated that, it showed me that there wasn't much love there for the players nor understanding for what a character build-up in an RPG is.

While the gameplay mechanics and especially the fighting mechanics were good, the other aspects were not that great. Climbing and running was hard for me right until the end. And don't get me started on that horse and the horse speed limit. What the hell, Ubisoft.

Setting: 7. While the graphics aspect was perfect, the texture details, most of the historical landmarks looked absolutely breathtaking and also many of the cities were created after the accurate archaeological plans (Delphi for example), the negative aspects of the game, the gameplay, made it less enjoyable than it should've been. I'm an archaeologist and I would've loved to be able to dive deeper in this beautiful ancient greek world.

Characters: 7. While there were some rather shallow characters and character attachment wasn't really possible for me personally and I did not much care about what happened to most of the game characters, there were some that showed depth and prior historical research. My favorite being Socrates: - Great job there :) Great look, great voice, great dialogues.

Good Voice Acting and animations, but the facial features of prominent characters were very repetitive. So many looked like Barnabas, and Barnabas had very special facial features.

In Summary: I'm so glad it's over, please no DLCs for me. But I might miss it one day someday maybe.
