Tries to be both Dark Souls and Darksiders and fails at both

User Rating: 4 | Darksiders III PC

I've only played a little bit (a couple hours) so take my review with a grain of salt. I suppose it's possible the game gets better if you keep at it. However, I feel absolutely no desire to play this game any more, and the little time I've put into it leaves me utterly disappointed in a sequel I've been waiting for ever since finished Darksiders 2.

Technically speaking, the game is perfectly competent. Graphics are perhaps somewhat dated but acceptable, sound design is fine, and I haven't experienced any technical difficulties aside from a frame drop here and there.

The gameplay is just atrocious. There is no manual save again, but it feels so much more tedious here than in Darksiders 2. The close in camera prevents you from picking up on enemies behind you, and most of the fighting feels like desperately trying to avoid being in the middle of a group because you cannot survive, and waiting for enemies to attack so you can dodge and counter. It's entirely possible to get caught in a never ending combo from two or more enemies and wiped out in a few seconds. Darksiders 2 was challenging, but this seems to revel in punishment and frustration. However, it doesn't give you the tools that a game like Dark Souls does in order to pass the fights, leaving you with only a few possible strategies. If you're not a fan of hit and run, well, that's unfortunate because that's about all you can do here, even when corralling enemies to try and gain favorable conditions. Despite your whip weapon, enemies typically have similar range to you, making it difficult to keep them at arms reach at times.

The level design tries to pretend to be more than a hallway by adding a few side passages and small areas to explore, but there's truly only one way to go. While Darksiders was fairly linear, it did a better job hiding it, and there were plenty of places to explore in Darksiders 2. Again, this may change once you get further into Darksiders 3, so take this with a grain of salt.

All in all, I really cannot recommend this game. It has the sense of being an obligatory sequel rather than something done out of love, and tries to be something it's not. If you absolutely must get it, wait for a sale.
