Don't Starve

Having been a fan of quirky arcade games I recently purchased the very dark but ever so charming 'Don't Starve' produced by indie developer Klei Entertainment. Don't Starve leave's you abandoned in the wilderness with the threat of wild animals, starvation and the slow decline of your own sanity as the only kind of welcome you receive. There is an array of characters to choose from but the first you'll play as is 'Gentleman Scientist' Wilson who, apart from growing a kick ass beard, has no discernable skills. This however is to be expected of an introductory character and the more you unlock the more varied the skill set becomes.

Don't Starve's gameplay boils down to gather, build and above all survive. By day you forage for food and building materials. By night you do little else but stand by your fire and maintain hunger levels until dawn which then restarts the cycle. It goes without saying that as you delve further and further into the game your options become plentiful and there just isn't enough time in the day to do everything you want so managing everything can become a pretty strenuous task. More often than not do you find yourself racing against the clock to get back to your fire pit before being consumed by the darkness.

Overall Don't Starve is a game that anyone can pick up and play. Sure you are going to die a lot early on but the learning curve of this game is akin to that of Minecraft and Terraria so with a little effort and determination you can survive like you're a natural born Bear Grylls!
