Apparently it won a hell lot of awards, has 6 Academy Awards nominations and good reviews (in general). So I decided to watch it and I was not impressed AT ALL. There were no on-going action/adventure as some reviews claimed. Even if there was, it's not much "action". The plot (and the way it was carried out) was very much mediocre too. This film failed in all aspects in my books...
I thought it was an amazing film, I loved everything from the way the two worlds were blended to the cinematography. Its not a movie for everyone, but if you are really into film then you gotta see it. After taking a film studies class in college last semester I have an even greater appreciation for film, and Guillermo de Toro's film is one I greatly appreciate more so becasue of it.Â
The audience (about 5 or 6 people) was cheering on Mercedes when she ripped open Captain's mouth with the knife/hook thing. She was so kickass throughout that whole movie. In fact, I think she's my new role model. I loved Ofelia too, mostly because I can relate to her a lot. I think the scene with the baby-eating monster was probably my favorite. That thing scared the crap outta me, but at the same time, the design was so cool.
As far as action, I thought there was a ton of it. It takes a little while to get to it since the movie starts up kinda' slow, but 20 minutes and it's there. It's quite violent and gruesome, as many of del Toro's works are known for. But I also don't think the action was supposed to be a main part of it anyway. It was a fairytale and the action was just a part of it, if you get what I mean.
Whoever liked Pan's Labyrinth should probably try seeing "The Devil's Backbone", also by del Toro. Pan's Labyrinth is the second movie in a trilogy of movies that are set during the Spanish War, and Devil's Backbone is the first.
