Evil Dead Rise just came to Max. It’s pretty good! Are you a horror movie fan, OT? Favorites? still love the original Exorcist. Also, It Follows was great.

@SolidGame_basic: yeah It Follows was really great. Really cool spin on the horror genre.
I do like horror. Don't watch as much as I'd like since it's generally an emotionally-intense genre and it takes a lot out of me, but I do like it.
I really like where horror films have gotten to at this point. I feel like we had a golden era back in the day where horror was respected, with films like Omen, Exorcist, Psycho, and so on. Then it got to the slasher stuff and the 80's, and that was fun and all. Then it got sort of corny and lame. But in the past 10-15 years I think horror has really reclaimed the title of being one of the better genres of cinema out there.
We got movies like Tucker and Dale, which is arguably one of the best bromance movies out there, in addition to a great comedy spin to horror.
Movies like Teeth and It Follows make great social commentary about a woman's place in the world, and how that balance can be tipped and women empowered (or cursed).
The Babadook took horror from jump scares and developed it into a slow-burn psychological horror film that just about anyone that has struggled with mental illness (essentially everyone) can relate to.
Happy Death Day took the Groundhog Day formula of reliving each day over and over again and gave it the slasher horror film treatment. Arguably a murder-mystery to rival Scream in my opinion (though I of course love the Scream series).
We even got some decent horror series on streaming services and TV. Evil Dead was a great series, with series original Bruce Campbell camping it up to his best and me loving him for it. Great practical effects and a surprisingly good story and writing really kept me hooked and looking forward to the next episode.
American Horror Story has really pushed the envelope as well, with great casting, writing, and unique settings and stories. I'm way behind on the series as a whole but I loved the first 3-4 seasons or however much I watched.
The Last of Us took the classic trope of "monsters are bad, yes, but humans are worse!" and took it to the next level. The real horror of the series is, despite the ever-present threat of fungus-infested monsters, you were more terrified and suspicious of the people they encountered.
While I haven't seen these shows, I hear the following is quite good: Yellowjackets, The Strain, The Stand, The Mist, Bates Motel, and Penny Dreadful.
Love horror, but have to scrape the bottom of the barrel because most are trash, possibly good ideas but produced with low budgets. Once in a while though I find a gem. I'm not picky though, just a modestly okay horror film is food enough for me.
Horror is such a wide umbrella though. It can fall on cusp of things like thrillers, dramas, and comedies. Subject can be supernatural/paranormal, psychological, science fiction, etc. So, there's no true formula or way to go about it.
Mixed about Evil Dead Rise. I enjoyed it but wished it could have been better. But more mixed about how I liked the Evil Dead reboot from years before and kind of lament they didn't keep up to date making new movies. Hopefully Evil Dead Rise is a sign they want to keep the franchise going on the big screen, hopefully follow ups are done in a timely manner.
@mrbojangles25: not sure how to put my finger on it but one of the things I love about American Horror story as how they use a lot of the same cast through each iteration taking on new different roles, and how each season we'll see these same actors and actresses taking on different types of characters to designed around the theme of the season. It gives the production character, makes the endeavor feel intimate, and I love to see when they bring in guests to play roles even if they don't stick around for more seasons, or even to see some come and stick around for future seasons.
And it's great too is these seasons are stand alone, there's no pressure to have to keep up with each and every one. But if one has a premise that's more appealing, one need not play catch-up with series to watch it (except Apocalyse because it tied them all together).
Big time. Favorite era late 80s-mid 90s for horror movies. But I'll watch from all times. Classic or modern.
Like the Texas chainsaw remake a lot, one of the few times I like the remake more than the OG. Thought sinister was great as far as more modern newer horror movies.
People under the stairs, hellraiser, pet cemetery , exorcist, poltergeist, IT, child's play, nightmare on elm, that era prob my favorite
Kinda disagree with it follows, actually hated that movie. Saw it in theaters. Found it little goofy.
@sargentd: @lamprey263: @mrbojangles25: just saw Barbarian. Thought it was good, actually
Yeah, it was good. Liked how it had that split in the middle where it felt like two different movies and then came together.
