The epic holiday sales are frankly amazing, and it's about time that fatty Gabe got competition. I'm very impressed with epic, and now I'm considering playing far more on epic. What are your thoughts?

Fatty Gabe has been milking the pc crowd for far too long, and it's good to see some competition and real discounts.

The sales look pretty disappointing TBH.

Much better deals to be had.

EGS is missing too many features (community, workshop, controller support, big picture, support for more platforms), they can't rely on price alone to compete. I would pay more to get it on Steam or have DRM-free GOG version.

Great to see more competition but Valve and GOG just offer a better overall package at the moment.

If Epic started making some great games instead of poaching existing games then I'll sit up and take more notice.

At the moment I'm happy to pay a bit more on Steam and GOG if needed since GOG do DRM free and have some Linux support and Steam is a big driver with gaming on Linux and also does cool stuff like the Steam controller, Index and Deck.

@girlusocrazy: I don't care about any of those things, except the controller support...which most games already have built in support for, and big picture, which isn't a huge deal to me anyways. End of the day, none of those things are deal breakers. The best price wins, and there are deals on epic that are better than even sketchy places like gog

Largely ignore EGS outside of free games due to their attempts to pay off devs to funnel players to an inferior service where it was all about the Publishers getting more money. Game media jumping in as well trying to make it a thing. Failed miserably.

GOG's good, not a bad word to say about it.

I always snag pickup on EGS durring Christmas. This year the coupon is for 33% that's cool. Think I might snag cyberpunk DLC since I got the base game on EGS last holiday, might grab KH games too just to have them on PC

They really underestimated people. Honestly thought they'd just be able to redirect folk through bribes with no basic concept of that fact pc gaming and console gaming are two separate things.

The whole "wow HOWT exclusive" shit doesn't really fly on PC. And many of it's biggest games are not reliant of AAA big budget stuff, nor traditional marketing.

And pc gamers can just steal shit in 2 seconds. You need a good repor.

Epic was basically announcing "developers and publishers will decide the outcome" pandering to them. With the line "it will be good for you as well", like the fucking gaming industry has earned a single iota of good-will of any kind.

For a bunch of marketing and research goobers they probably overpaid to think tank this shit, they sure came across as dumb.

@mrbojangles25: I have begun buying more games from EGS, the good thing is you can get 5% cash back, whereas Steam you only get Steam points to buy virtual stickers and forum avatars etc. I still do buy games on Steam (I have 529 games on Steam, have used the service since 2009 and absolutely love it). But that’s not the point behind EGS, the main thing is we need a major competitor to Steam in the PC gaming market. Sure GOG Galaxy is nice but the player base isn’t big enough to hold a candle to Steam. Epic Games is the only company that can stand against Valve.

Oh, and the 12% fee is much nicer than 30%.

There were articles just a few weeks back talking about how EGS is hurting for money, they keep spending money to give those free games away and everyone else was just like they only go there for the free games. They haven't managed to actually get people to come spend money there like consumers do for Steam or GOG. People just want the free games.

I have yet to buy a game from EGS personally, but I'll compare sales on storefront options everytime. Usually, their about the same but still, Thats the wonderful thing about PC gaming. I get to choose what storefront I buy from.

To paraphrase an old philosophical thought experiment: "If there's a sale on EGS and no one is around to care about it, is there really a sale?"

Rather just buy games on GOG if possible. They give you the installer files. Put them on a NAS and have them forever.

After that I will grab on Steam. They are more neutral and don't have that try-hard attitude like EGS. Don't really care to support a company that pays for exclusivity, for the most part.

Competition from Epic...

I buy my games largely through Steam, but there are plenty of sites that offer you keys (legally), as well as other storefronts.

@blaznwiipspman1:

Swing and miss. If you know anything about me, you would know I was an early advocate for EGS, precisely because I think Steam could use some competition. I was even largely silent when Timmy started signing up his exclusives, seeing it as an annoying but perfectly valid strategy for establishing market foothold.

But with EGS still failing to turn a profit years later and it earning the reputation as a, quote; "marketing black hole" among developers, I'm simply acknowledging the reality of the situation:

EGS is a failure.

Since the Epic store has never actually made any money, I'm guessing it's only a matter of time before it shuts down. Like, it's carried at the moment by the Fortnite bubble, but that won't last.

So what happens to all of the free games when the store shuts down?

They bribe and force people, since no one really wants to use a shitty storefront when there's a good one like Steam.
They don't have any "amazing holiday sales".
You shit on Steam.

Working for them was the only good reason I could think of why someone would shill for Epic like that, but I guess you being a weirdo is just as likely.

I'm all for competition, but not a shitty bribing bullshit one.

Isn't that what most tech companies run on? Fumes?

Twitter never made any money, after Elon bought it all he ever did was try and monetise it.

I think most of the tech or tech sites that we use aren't meant to make money right away.

Steam was smart to start making money right away.

@Mozelleple112: Yeah, and there are definitely people playing it on PC. It will come to other stores eventually but some don't want to wait or don't care and they will purchase it on EGS. The plan is probably to slowly pick people off and get them comfortable with buying on EGS.

I wouldn't say that as Control was also published by Epic as well. Control stay with Epic over a year later and eventually made it to Steam and GoG. Alan Wake 2 & Control are both link to the story and share the same universe as you play in Alan Wake 2. I'm sure Alan Wake 2 will make its way to Steam/GoG next year or so.

Quantum Break however doesn't as that IP game belongs to MS.

Regarding Epic. PC gamers should only be using EGS only for their exclusive games you cannot get anywhere else on the client but EGS. I wasn't gonna wait for Alan Wake 2 to come to Steam in a year or so, I wanna play it asap and that's what I'm doing now. Great game. I did the same for Control, Dead Island 2, Metro: Exodus, & Kena: Bridge of Spirits. The free games are a bonus to me. The hate for EGS just seems overblown if you ask me. Little Timmy however needs to add more features if he really wants to stay competitive.

Yeah, this is the correct way to see this. When Gabe was saving PC gaming with Steam, Tim was calling all PC gamers pirates and refused to release the game on PC. Now he's smelling money and it's somehow Valve who are destroying PC gaming for being a "monopoly" while at the same time dreaming about EGS controlling over 50% of PC market. **** that asshole.

@blaznwiipspman1: I've never used Big Picture. Why is this feature so popular? I have no problem switching to my other display. I have a profile for it in Monitor Profile Switcher and simply press a shortcut.
