So is Switch 2 part of current gen or start of next gen?

For starters, the original Switch is considered 8th gen which PS4 and Xbox One belong to.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eighth_generation_of_video_game_consoles

The eighth generation of video game consolesbegan in 2012, and consists of fourhome video game consoles: theWii Ureleased in 2012, thePlayStation 4family in 2013, theXbox Onefamily in 2013, and theNintendo Switchfamily in 2017.

And PS5 and XSX/XSS are considers 9th gen.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ninth_generation_of_video_game_consoles

Theninth generation of video game consolesbegan in November 2020 with the releases ofMicrosoft'sXbox Series X and Series Sconsole family andSony'sPlayStation 5.[

So logically, the Switch 2 would be joining 9th gen. And if that the case, comparisons between the original Switch and the PS5 are null and void. Am I rite, SW?

Nintendo's basically saying the new gen doesn't start until We get there.

Which is kinda hilarious.

Nintendo offsetting their hardware launches with the competition is genius. Xbox and PlayStation launching at the same time limits sales potential. Not everyone can/will buy both consoles. Nintendo waiting for industry-wide hardware spending to slow down reignites the industry and all the focus is on Nintendo.

In the real world: it's all messy and also doesn't really matter.

However as per SW: Generations of consoles has been defined as release schedule rather than horsepower. So it is now messy since Nintendo decided to go off messin: How rude.

Anyway one could argue that last gen ended in 2017 with the launch of the switch. It's certainly very active in the market currently and it has it's own exclusives and is the successor to the wiiu. By all accounts the switch reached the criteria of a new gen machine.

Now one could also argue that the switch is more like a PS4 pro: A mid gen refresh. However, for the above reasons, that argument has problems. The PS4 Pro/X1X don't have any exclusives. No one made games just for those systems. They are very much just an extension of their base counterparts.

So yeah it's a bit messy but it would be a but ridiculous to argue that Nintendo have not competed in the current gen market.

Wii U was 8th with PS4 and Xbox One. Switch is current gen. Switch 2 is next gen. If anyone actually cares about this stuff.

I think that's another reason why Sony is doing a PS5 Pro.

Don’t know, but what would be the alternative? If we just went by when a new console is introduced, then is Switch 2 and PS5 PRO considered 10th gen?

Its not next gen nor last. Its a weak gen, this is what we call it. A generation specially crafted for people that don't play video games.

Hold on while I bribe Wikipedia 10 cents to make Switch 9th gen, making comparisons between it and the PS5 valid again.

It's ps3 and Xbox 360 level hardware in switch and the switch 2 is rumored to be on the level of ps4/Xbox 360. So the switch is generation 7, and switch 2 will be generation 8

The Nintendo Switch 2, although yet to be officially confirmed or released, would likely mark the start of the next generation for Nintendo. The original Nintendo Switch falls under the current generation of gaming consoles.

It will be Nintendo's next gen.

If you want to include that in "current gen of consoles" you may, as there is no official definition of console gens.

But who really gives a shit? And why?

The generation starts when Sony says it starts.

1994

2000

2006

2013

2020

The Wii was a shitty 6th gen console released in the 7th gen.

The Wii-U was 7th gen console released just before the 8th gen

The Switch is a 7th gen console released in the middle of the 8th gen and is still being sold in the 9th gen.

The Switch 2 will be an 8th gen console released in the 9th gen, and will still be sold when the 10th gen (2027 or whenever Sony releases the PS6) arrives.

Switch 2 will be apart of current gen, it will have current gen architecture and features such as mesh shaders, SSD and etc. All features that last gen consoles lacked which couldn't handle Unreal Engine 5.

The GTX 1080ti could not handle running Alan Wake 2 because it lack current generation features such as mesh shaders and was outperformed by the Series S (4 teraflops) and the weaker RX 6400 (3.5 teraflops) (source YouTube https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=760bA_D2i24&pp=ygUTcnggNjQwMCBhbGFuIHdha2UgMg%3D%3D )

Architecture and features determine the generations more than release date and compute power ( raw rasterisation can be compensated with upscaling and mesh shaders).

I hope it's totally backwards compatible with the Switch 1.

Will be fun to watch ppl complain about it.

I'm betting it won't be, but only because Nintendo is sore about their Swith 1 being completely wide open.

It is current gen. This gen the consoles is very capable of running games at decent frame rates and visually stunning, not to mention there barely exclusive next gen only titles on PS5/XB. PS5 Pro coming as well next year so it will be a long cycle.

What does it matter?

No matter when a Switch 2 is released it will be compared to the XSX and PS5 on these boards, despite the fact that the Switch 2 will probably draw 20W in handheld mode, while a PS5 maxes out at around 300W.

That's what I do. No idea why some think current gen should be defined by "at least similar to Nvidia 2070, and 16GB RAM in power". It's just dumb and silly.

New main consoles = new console gen. There we go, much easier.

@Mozelleple112: You must enjoy being wrong all the time, its kinda your shtick now.

There were 4 generations of consoles before the OG Playstation was released.

That's just the facts.
