A great conclusion to a great trilogy.

"Gears of War 3" comes after "God of War III" and "Halo Reach". And while it's not as evolved as either of those two, it's still a great game. Cliffy B's trilogy comes to a close with this installment which still maintains the tight run 'n' gun gameplay and epic setpieces its predecessors had. While it maybe "more of the same", GOW III refines the online multiplayer matches with smoother controls, tons of unlockables, an updated "Horde" mode and the new "Beast" batttles which is like "Horde" but with players as the Locust. If you've played "Left 4 Dead" or "Dead Space 2" online, then you'll be familiar with the latter. Additionally, the game includes the longest campaign of the series which can be played online coooperatively with 3 other players. If you want, you can also opt to play the campaign levels in Arcade mode which adds mutators to the mix. Mutators are just like the Skulls from "Halo", they're fun modifiers that slightly change the expeirence.

The game picks up a few years after the conclusion to "Gears of War 2". The scenario is grim with the world being almost completely dominated by the Locust. Dom is still suffering from the loss of his wife Maria and Marcus is still the same gruff badass he's always been. You'll play through the first Act of the game as Marcus and Dom as well as the duo of Cole and Baird. Weapons from previous "Gears" games return as well as new firearms such as the sawed-off shotgun (which can be a one-shot multi-kill!). Ironsights can now be used with the Hammerburst and each weapon has its own execution. Regarding the multiplayer portion, Epic Games has borrowed a little from its contemporaries. "Black Ops"-like weapon skins are in as well as medals and ribbons from DICE's "Battlefield" series. The constant unlockables makes progressing a little like "Call of Duty", but otherwise the action is still very much classic GOW.

Overall, while the formula remains the same after six years, this last chapter of the trilogy tightens up the familiarity with a few updates that help make it the best entry. So, if you love the series, than you'll enjoy "Gears of War 3". Pros: Classic run n' gun gameplay still feels great. Satisfying conclusion to the trilogy. Multiplayer is better than ever. Cons: Less innovative than it's predecesors. Dom's beard and Marcus' hair.
