Does nothing new from God of War 1, but a brilliant game nonetheless

What's the point of writing a review on a game released 6 years ago and one which most people have probably already played? No one's likely to read this review, but since the internet is a free place, I'm going to write a short review anyway:

  • The game feels easy if you've played God of War 1 & 2 on the PS3 (or maybe even the PS2). Since this is a port from PSP (which has fewer buttons), the controls are less complicated. Some of the combination moves have been stitched together. This makes combat comparatively easier.
  • There's nothing new from God of War 1 in terms of gameplay. In fact, some of it has been taken away (such as the "Rage of the Gods" meter). It feels like the game's been slightly stripped down into a smaller package -- understandable, given it was designed for the PSP.
  • The graphics also are not as clean and crisp as other HD games in the series, including the re-released God of War 1 & 2.
  • The story is fairly interesting and delves deeper into Greek mythology. Of course, the highlight of the entire God of War series is the introduction of so many legends, heroes, Gods and demi-gods from the pantheon of Greek mythology. You also get to meet some titans, and your meeting with Atlas sets the stage for Kratos' meeting with the titans in God of War 2.
  • Some of the new magic is pretty good -- I enjoyed the Efreet.
  • There are a couple of new weapons, as well. The Gauntlet of Zeus is an excellently powerful weapon, and makes a satisfying "thunk" sound when you punch someone.
  • Puzzles are almost non-existent, or if there are any, then they are extremely easy.
  • Ultimately, the game is extremely easy. It rewards you with Gorgon Eyes and Phoenix Feathers and red orbs very regularly. I had maxed out my health, magic and all my weapons with plenty of the game still left to go.
