Not a bad way to pass 4 hours.

User Rating: 7 | Homefront PC
Homefront is a FPS set during a future invasion of N. Korea.

For what it's worth, the game is not bad. Introductory montage sequences depicting the rise of N. Korea as a world threat was interesting and plausible. After the montage, we're inserted in the FPV of the main character - a mid level pilot who is needed to conduct a fly mission critical for the resistance.

Graphics are OK, but not anything that seem revolutionary. Controls are loose at first, but once you get the hang of it, they feel like they tighten up enough to enjoy the game. Physics are a bit disappointing but, like the controls, they even out as the game progresses. Sound is high quality, and you're presented with a great mix of gunfire, explosions, music, and radio chatter.

One thing the game does very well is put you in the middle of the action. You are literally surrounded by threats, explosions, gunfire, running threats, and air and elevation threats. Occasionally, this would be frustrating because you would get killed outright with no warning. However, loads were fast, and save checkpoints were frequent enough to avoid frustration. In addition, you spend the entire series of missions following a mission leader. There's little room for autonomy - you're basically on a linear path the whole game - but for the most part, there's enough action and selection of weapons that it keeps you engaged. The game play style reminds me of the earliest Medal of Honor AA games from back in '02 - just enough perceived flexibility to keep you interested.

The story is fair, and there's a few set pieces and visuals that are powerful. I enjoyed the feelings that the game provoked in the story interaction. The single player mission is short - 4 hours - but by the time you complete the mission, you feel like you've adequately experienced the game and have gotten your value from the ride.

Overall, I'm glad I played this. I knew it wasn't very highly rated going in, but I needed to snap through at least one of the games on my backlog to stoke a little sense of personal achievement. For that, this game was just right for the goal at hand. A little fun, a little memorable, and able to put it down and move one.
