I do not like puzzle games. I feel that you can get an equal experience on any game site for no money. Lumines (Pronounced Loo-min-ess, Not Loo-mines) takes such a classic puzzle game and makes it the most addictive game to ever hit the PSP. The concept of Lumines is to match up colors on 2 by 2 squares with varying designs, you can then put two of the same colors next to that and create some amazing and extremely satisfying combos. Occasion a special block with a small emblem on it will come along and if that is used in a combo it will destroy all block of the same color that are connected to it. This all takes place on a 16 by 10 board.

This is probably the brightest and most colorful game on the PSP. Lumines MUST be played on the highest brightness setting (Fear not, as this game does not waste battery, I got around 8 hours before my battery ran out on the highest brightness.), it is simply beautiful from the background to the blocks to the grids themselves. as you keep playing you will unlock new "Skins" which usually take somewhere between 5-10 minutes depending on your skill level. Getting new skins is one of the addictive qualities of the game, for each skin has its own look, sound , pace, and sometimes it feels like a completely different game altogether.

The skins not only change what it looks like, it also changes the music. Luckily, Q Entertainment chose the most soothing soundtrack ever. E-V-E-R. From jazzy techno to bass-pounding hip-hop (Two genres that I do not like), the soundtrack not only fits perfectly with the skins, but with the game as a whole. The only complaint I have is that you may get sick of the song in the first skin quickly, as it will be the one you hear the most since you have to go in the same order of skins every time.

As for other modes; There is a Vs. mode against the computer in which you play for screen space by getting combos, it's nice because you can unlock new skins in this mode but the AI gets tough very fast so it seems like it's used just as a way to cool down after a long round of challenge mode. This mode is also available for 2 people to play via Ad-Hoc. There is also Single Skin Mode and Time-Attack Mode (Self-Explanatory) but these aren't really worth it unless although you may like Single-Skin mode if you REALLY like one skin and want to play it all the way in and out. The final mode is Puzzle mode in which you try to create a design from using all of the same color blocks. It's a nice diversion, but it's too much work and too little payoff.

Overall, Lumines is a great game that's totally worth the bargain price of $20 which it is at now, and frankly, I'd probably buy it for twice that because that's how much I would get out of it. For any puzzle fans (Or even anyone who remotely enjoys them) this is a must buy. For people who do not like them it's worth it to rent or borrow from a friend, because you're missing out on so much more than you think.
