If only it had a bigger budget

User Rating: 6 | Mafia: Definitive Edition PC

I never played the original Mafia game, but, from what I have seen on YouTube, the dialogue and voice acting were atrocious, which, thankfully, is not the case here. That is a big deal, because the game is story-driven. The story is nothing special – just your average gangster movie – but it does keep you interested until the very end, even if it is predictable, and the characters are memorable. The gameplay is pretty repetitive – you drive, shoot, or both, with a little stealth thrown in – but the game is short, so it simply doesn't get the chance to get too old. The game's biggest flaw is its glaringly tight budget: the graphics are about five years out of date, and, even though there is a huge city, it is dead. There are hardly any people on the streets, no traffic lights/cops, no events, no side missions, nothing. I understand that this is not really an open-world game, and that, by itself, is not a bad thing, but a poor backdrop still detracts from the story. To really bring a 1930's American city to life, even with outdated graphics, would have been amazing, because it was a fascinating time, but, sadly, Hangar 13 aren't Ubisoft. What we got in the end is a fun one-time experience with almost no replay value. Unless you are a fan of the original series, I'd wait until it goes on sale.
